As the series comes from the creator of Elfen Lied, there should be no surprise that there's plenty of sad moments. This series has been marked 'Tragedy' for a reason.

  • Chie sacrificing herself so that Kotori could live long enough to see her birthday.
  • The death of Nanami. Poor girl just wanted to have friends and had just found some. Pop goes the beacon.
  • Mizuka, poor girl just wanted to live, desperately hoping that the researchers wouldn't kill her as long as she remained useful.
  • Murakami is forced to eject Takatori Kotori to prevent her from accidentally killing all life on Earth. It's incredibly heartbreaking to watch her melt as she tries to keep up a smile for her friends. It also worthy to note that this is the first time in the manga that one of the main characters have died.
  • Kuroha losing her memories as Kuroneko during her fight against Valkyria. Unfortunately the battle was so taxing on her that she loses all of her memories again, not just of Kuroneko, but everything else she remembered as Kuroha as well. In the manga she also acts somewhat cold towards Ryouta again, having forgotten about him and wondering why this guy keeps sticking around her.
  • Rin, Rurumi, and Misaki's fate in the manga after the Valkyria arc. All three girls seem like they would have been perfectly happy to run away and join Kana's group given the chance, but instead are killed off in various ways. Rurumi's Drasil hatches, then devours her former body, along with Rin. Misaki survives the encounter with Rurumi's drasil long enough for Hexenjagd to show up to kill it, only to then get remotely ejected right afterwards.
  • Mina's Heroic Sacrifice and death. Not only does Kana completely break down, the fans took it hard. The fact that Makina boasted about it, calling it a "good deed" has not won him any fans. Even Korofuku gets a bit teary-eyed when he hears about it in chapter 155.
  • Hrist. All she wanted was to get the heck out of Vingulf, have the horrific experimentation STOP, and eat some good food. Instead, everyone she's been nice to, or have been nice to her, is dead, and she's been twisted into an agent of death by an Ax-Crazy "researcher" forcing her to kill over 8000 witches, who did nothing wrong, over a six-month period. The fact that she's curled up in a fetal position, not looking at anyone or anything as she's doing it shows that she's really not enjoying it, much as Onodera leads herself to believe.
  • Say what you will about Kazumi. Her fate in chapter 179 has not left a dry eye anywhere in the fanbase.
