"Forgive me..."

  • Book 1, Chapter 2:
    • During an optional side quest, Raine can relive their saddest memory, which involved them and their adoptive brother Kade witnessing the villagers of Riverbend burying the victims of a bandit raid, including their parents.
    • Nia's mentor is killed by a dark rot inflicted upon him by a member of the Shadow Court. Poor Nia is distraught, having had a better bond with him than her own parents.
  • In Book 1, Chapter 11, the party finds out that Tyril's friend Kaya was turned into a glass statue, her face frozen in fear. Worse, she died alone, with no one to rescue her. The end of the next chapter has Tyril promise to avenge his fallen friend, once and for all.
  • In the finale of Book 1, Raine has to stab Nia, who has been possessed by The Dreadlord, with the Blade of Light in order to save the world. They really don't want to go through with it, but they have no choice.
Raine: Forgive me... ( stabs Nia with the Blade of Light)
  • After Raine's kidnapping at the start of Book 2, they return from the Shadow Realm to discover that they've been gone for a whole year, and that their companions tried desperately for months to get them back. In the end, they went their separate ways, with Imtura in particular Drowning Her Sorrows and getting into bar fights to take her mind off things. When Raine encounters her in Book 2, Chapter 4, Imtura tells Raine that they're not real, having had her chain yanked so many times that she believes Raine is just an illusion.
  • Book 2, Chapter 11 has multiple. It's not called "Healing and Hard Truths" for nothing.
    • The death of Cherta's grandmother Portia. Cherta and the party thought the Light magic from the amulet they found would cure her grandmother, but it turned the old lady into a monster instead, until an elder of Zaradun turned her back to normal by using Shadow magic. The elder explained that by trying to keep her grandmother alive, Cherta ended up trapping Portia's spirit. In other words, it's time for Cherta's grandmother to go, and there's nothing that can be done, lest Portia turns into the monster again.
    • Tyril discovering that everything he knew about magic and religion was a lie, sending him into a Heroic BSoD.
  • At the end of Book 2, Chapter 14, Valax, who has been slowly warming up to Raine over the last couple of chapters, betrays them and their party, much to Raine's shock. Valax shows that she is conflicted over this decision, but it was a case of I Did What I Had to Do.
Valax: I'm sorry, Raine. This is for my people.
  • Book 2, Chapter 15 ends with Imtura discovering that her mother is dead. Despite her not being a good parent, it's still saddening for poor Imtura. The next chapter reveals that Queen Ventra had been ill for some time and kept it a secret from most people, including Imtura, similar to Constantine from The Royal Romance.
