Heart-wrenching moments in the Black Crayons series:

A Child's Innocence

  • The deaths of Jolt and Flareup. The latter's death especially given how Arcee and Chromia react to it.
  • Sam being forced into being The Mole for the Decepticons or else they will kill Mikaela. It's really shown how much he does not want to betray his friends but he does not also want anything bad happen to his girlfriend. And while he's being forced to betray them, Optimus tells Sam that they are friends. It gets even worse when he sees the Xanthium explodes and they are all seemingly killed.
  • Annabelle's reaction to the Autobots seemingly dying when the Xanthium explodes. And her trying to call them on her phone, pleading for someone to respond makes it even worse.
    • It gets even worse when the Autobots are actually alive and were listening to Annabelle trying to call them, but couldn't out of concern of being discovered by the Decepticons.
    • Earlier, her pleading desperately to Will and Ironhide, her two father figures, to get the Autobots to stay. They can only say that there is nothing they can do.
  • Mikaela being so angry at the fact that she is watching the Decpticons invade Chicago and is incapable of doing anything about it.
  • Chicago being ravaged by the Decepticons. They clearly do not discriminate as they kill everyone they could find: men, women, and children. When Sam and the military show up, they take note how these were innocent people going through their everyday lives before the Decepticons came and how their the corpses could barely be recognized and if they could even be given proper funerals. When Optimus looks at the ruins of Chicago, he is outraged at not being able to save their lives and notes that the Decepticons have gone too far. When Annabelle comes across the skeletons, she thinks they are Halloween decorations, unaware to the fact that she is looking at what was left of everyone who suffered the Decepticons' wrath.
  • Sarah Lennox breaking down in tears upon finding out that her daughter is currently in Chicago while the Decepticons are tearing it apart.
  • Optimus thinking about Sentinel's fall from grace, how he had become no different than Megatron.
  • Ironhide's worry about Annabelle nearly getting killed.

Not According to Plan

  • Izabella makes an appearance in this story as a child who just recently lost her parents to the Decepticons.
  • Ironhide thinking about nearly losing Annabelle, the one thing in his life that wasn't touched by the Autobot-Decepticon conflict, because of Sentinel Prime's betrayal.
  • Sam's observation upon his first meeting with Izabella.
But there was a heaviness and cynicism behind her eyes that Annabelle lacked, something no child should carry.
  • Izabella revealing to Wheelie that she lost her parents to the Decepticons.
Quiet and with clear sadness in her voice, she mumbled, "Don't have any parents. Not anymore. They're gone."
He stiffened at her words. It made sense. Izabella lost her parents. A lot of people died in Chicago. The Decepticons killed so many humans. Even Brains died and he was at least a little more durable than some of them. The possibility of her family dying in the attack was just too high.
