Tear Jerker / Becky Lynch

Go To

  • The night Becky was informed she would be pulled from Survivor Series 2018 on account of concussion. More than the hero's ovation she received from the crowd and the entire SmackDown women's roster that night, Becky's quiet, dignified devastation at being removed from what would have been the match of her life, not to mention her complete unwillingness to quit, was what cemented her Heel–Face Turn that month.
"This ain't over. It can't be over."
  • The backstory behind her retirement at the age of nineteen. She said for years that her injury was just too serious to risk wrestling again, but she eventually came out and said that it was entirely down to fear. She was suffering from depression and became too terrified to ever wrestle again — and so left the business for six years. It took a talk with Fergal Devitt (the future Finn Bálor) to convince her to return.
  • Becky also claims that she was on the verge of being let go before she'd even debuted on NXT because they couldn't find a character for her. So the much-criticised Oireland gimmick was literally a last-ditch attempt to save herself from getting fired.
  • During her WWE 24 documentary, there's a clip from a 2016 Mattel press conference where it's announced that there will be a set of dolls commemorating the WrestleMania 32 triple threat match between her, Sasha Banks and Charlotte Flair... except that they only announced dolls of just Sasha and Charlotte. While Becky was sitting alongside them during the reveal. Becky trying to hide her disappointment while Sasha and Charlotte play with the dolls is heartwrenching.
  • Before she became WWE's biggest name, there was a time that Becky wanted to quit the pro wrestling industry (again, and not because of a "forced to retire" injury deal, either). In an interview she had with Lilian Garcia a year before she became "The Man", Becky claims that "[her job] just wasn't working", which likely involved sadness over how underused she was compared to the other women in the company (such as the aforementioned doll situation). While her mother did talk her out of it, it is rather sad to see how Becky nearly quit the company. If it weren't for the support from her mother and fans, she would have most likely done it, too.
"I was in New York, and I remember calling her on the payphone. 'Mom, please, I wanna come home, I'm sorry. I'll get a real job but I wanna come home, please.' She was like, 'No, you're not gonna come home, you're gonna see this through,' and I just remember being in tears like this. And I think that was one of the best things that she had done."
  • The build-up to Survivor Series 2021 ended up being an ordeal for Becky.
    • After she was transferred to RAW and Charlotte Flair to SmackDown in the 2021 Draft despite being the women's champions of opposite brands, there was supposed to be a title exchange between the two (similar to what happened between The New Day and the Street Profits on a previous Draft). The problem was that a visibly upset Charlotte disrupted the exchange, even throwing her title to the floor. The kicker? This wasn't scripted — apparently, Charlotte was legitimately displeased with the booking.
    • The stunt resulted in Becky and Charlotte actually having a verbal altercation backstage after the show, with Charlotte even having to be escorted out of the building. Afterwards, both women would reveal that their well-known real-life friendship had broken down at some point in the past.
    • While this had the upside of giving extra attention to their match at Survivor Series 2021 (where the match went relatively smoothly despite some visible uneasiness between the two), it all culminated in this interview after the match, in which a visibly miserable Becky only gets a few words in before breaking down crying, and basically goes into a shoot where it's clear that, despite trying to put over the fact that she ultimately won the match, she is absolutely devastated for having lost her friend.
"To see where we came from, to where we are now, and the hatred there, y'know, the hatred going out there, and it's just— it's so sad. I got somebody who I loved so much, who I trusted with my life, and who we been through everything together, we nearly died in a car crash together. And just how much we despise each other now. I just wanted to rip her apart out there. I wanted to rip her apart. And I didn't break her arm like I wanted to, like I set out to do. And I don't know if I'm happy or I'm sad about that, but I got the win. And now she knows, she can't deny it, I'm the better woman."
  • After losing the RAW Women's Championship at WrestleMania 38 to Bianca Belair, Becky becomes more and more unhinged in reclaiming her title. Though it's typical heel behavior, one has to remember this is the first time since 2019 that Becky is without a championship, and before that, she was literally at the bottom of the roster and had to claw her way to the top. The fear of going back to being a nobody made Becky desperate enough to compete for the 24/7 title twice only to lose. In the months that followed, and after several more losses, Becky is no longer the happy go-lucky Irish Lass-Kicker, the proud and powerful Man or even the elegant Big Time Becks. She's desperate to reach the top once again, because if she's not at the top, Becky truly feels she's nobody. Truly a tragic mindset.
  • The 8/28/23 episode of RAW. With the wrestling world still reeling from the sudden death of Bray Wyatt four days prior, and tributes to him still continuing (albeit on a smaller scale than the dedicated memorial episode he had received on the SmackDown the previous Friday), Becky drew the main event slot opposing Zoey Stark in a Falls Count Anywhere match to further her feud and upcoming match with Trish Stratus. After winning the match, Becky takes the black "BRAY" armband from her arm and raises it aloft with a smile — but then her smile visibly cracks, and the last image as the title bumper appears and the screen fades to black is Becky breaking down in tears.
