When Caroline reveals she's pregnant with Struensee's child, they both realize they will have to persuade Christian to sleep with Caroline to pass the child off as his. Struensee is extremely reluctant but Caroline stoically insists its the only way, even though she is also repulsed by the idea. Afterwards, Struensee comes to see Caroline, who is sitting on the bed with a Thousand-Yard Stare and refuses to look at him. She tells him not to come near her because she stinks of Christian and that they must avoid each other until the baby is born so as not to arouse suspicion. Struensee clearly wants to comfort her but is unable to do anything, while Caroline is visibly filled with disgust and shame. Overall, the whole situation is horrible for everyone.
The scene following the birth of Caroline's daughter. She and Struensee have an emotional moment, where Caroline tearfully tells him "Now we are a family". It's incredibly bittersweet, because, due to the circumstances, they can never truly be a family.
Struensee's execution and Caroline's reaction to it. He's forced to watch his friend executed first and has to walk up the bloodstained steps to the scaffold, even slipping in it, much to the crowd's amusement. He is jeered and spat at by the very people he tried to help; at one point he even begins struggling with his guards and shouting that he is "one of [them]". He attempts to go out with as much dignity as he can, yet is still reduced to tears of fear and grief, with his last thoughts being of Caroline. When Caroline is told what happened she begins to sob, collapses to the floor and screams in utter anguish.
