  • Shawn walks up to a police department desk, then identifies himself as a psychic, saying he's like The Mentalist only not fake, and declaring that if he was fake, it would be a virtual carbon copynote . Other episodes indicate that Shawn is a fan of the show.
  • Also, the killer in "Let's Get Hairy" is named after Ken Tucker, a TV critic for Entertainment Weekly magazine, who has criticized the show in the past.
  • In "Shawn vs. The Red Phantom" Shawn and Gus meet a disgruntled comic book writer who's recently had a movie totally destroy his character's reputation. We aren't given details, but it's mentioned that the director added large nipples to the character's outfit.
  • Done in "Daredevils" at the later Die Hard sequels:
Shawn: "I'm Die Hard. He's die harder. We have two other guys in our crew, but they're not nearly as good as us."
  • "What is the deal with One Tree Hill? It's like a poorly executed Dawson's Creek."
  • "I think CGI has ruined movie story telling for all of us. I don't wanna say it's completely Michael Bay's fault, but that guy needs to be stopped because it's all his fault."
  • Someone on the writing team clearly has something against Chad Michael Murray.
  • The episode "Juliet Takes a Luvvah" includes a very obvious one at Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23:
Shawn: Don't be the B in Apartment 23! You're better than that! We're all better than that! At least I think we are!
  • "Juliet Takes a Luvvah" also contains another dig at their favorite target The Mentalist when talking about Juliet's online dating profile:
Tech guy: I mean who lists The Mentalist as one of their favorite TV shows?
    • Then the show goes out of its way to make fun of the show's tendency to berate The Mentalist.
Shawn: Why would you say that?
Tech guy: I- I don't know. It just felt like the thing to say.
Shawn: What do you have against The Mentalist?
Tech guy: I don't know, I've never watched it.
  • In Lassie Jerky:
Shawn: You know, Gus and I thought about [going to live in the forest away from humanity] after watching The Village, but then we didn't because that movie was horrible.
  • In a bit of Self-Deprecation, they open the eighth season remake of "Cloudy... with a Chance of Murder" by having Shawn and Gus discussing remakes, in which they pan The Dukes of Hazzard, especially that race-car driver, played by James Roday Rodriguez.
