Shout Out / Veronica Mars

Go To

  • Many. Also, the cast in general and Veronica in particular make old literary and film references that really should be outside their reference pools.
  • Appropriately, there are many references to detective stories. Veronica loves giving aliases from Film Noir.
"So...Cagny and Pasty?" [Points to herself and Tim Foyle]
"I'm Crockett. This is my partner...Tubbs."
  • The references to The Big Lebowski are so frequent they may overlap with Author Appeal, to say nothing of the time a scene was briefly shown while Veronica and Duncan were watching it.
  • Erle Stanley Gardner, under the name A.A. Fair, had a series of books about a detective named Donald Lam—a character who's less than 5'7", weighs 120 pounds soaking wet, and only won a single fistfight in the nearly 30 books he appeared in. Lam bears more resemblance to Veronica than the character who's actually named after him.
  • At one point Veronica puts a fortune cookie fortune on her mirror. The lucky numbers are 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, and 42.
  • Television Without Pity's reviewer for the show claimed that clearly, Gia's comment about Leo being "kind of mumbly" was a Shout-Out to them and their comment, in Leo's debut episode, that he was a bit of a mushmouth.
  • In episode 1X20, there's a reference to "the Albacore Yacht Club", which is out of Chinatown
  • When she infiltrates Neptune High's rival school, she gives her name as Betty, and claims to be from Riverdale. The student looks blank and says he's never heard of it, lampshading the fact that the reference really should be too old for your typical high school student.
  • Lamb constantly references Wizard of Oz by telling people to go 'see the wizard'
  • Lamb says 'I smell bread' when he is toast
    • More likely a reference to an episode of M*A*S*H
  • The references to Jane Austen (Jackie hates it, Veronica claims to have thrown beer at someone who insulted Pride and Prejudice, the world will end when Logan makes an "Emma" reference) become almost a running joke if you pay attention.
    • Veronica and Logan also watch Sense and Sensibility during one episode.
  • There is a nice shoutout to executive producer Joel Silver in season 3. The film Mindy O'Dell and Professor Landry watch at the Neptune Grand on the night of Cyrus O'Dell's death is Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, which Silver also produced.
    • Mac: "The next and last time I run will be to chase down and kill the inventor of ultimate frisbee." One of the inventors of ultimate frisbee is - Joel Silver.
    • Story editor and staff writer John Enbom gets two—Aaron Echolls' poster for The Long Haul refers to it as "A John Enbom Film", and his name is called at Veronica's high school graduation before Wallace's.
  • Two characters have Embarrassing Nicknames that reference characters on other shows: Cassidy "Beaver" Casablancas, and Vincent "Butters" Clemmons.
  • Episode 1x18 "Weapons of Class Destruction" is largely a Shout-Out to Heathers, including a homocidal teenager named Ben plotting to blow up a school, and said teenager (really an undercover ATF agent in this version) bearing a remarkable physical similarity to J.D., the identical character from Heathers.
  • In episode 2x8, Veronica tells a student radio host to ‘’Pump Up the Volume‘’, a shout out to another Christian Slater film.
  • A single Season 2 episode ("The Quick and the Wed") contains references to Monty Python ("huge tracts of land"), The Big Lebowski ("This is not 'Nam. This is bowling. There are rules."), Forrest Gump ("butt-tocks") and Back to the Future (a band's tour poster lists a gig at "Lone Pine Lodge").
  • In the film, Veronica answers the door and her friend bellows "Candygram for Mongo," and Veronica replies "Mongo like candy!"
  • Woody Goodman, when on the run, checks into a hotel as Mr. Underhill—a pseudonym also used by one Bilbo Baggins.
    • May also be a Fletch reference.
  • In late season 3, Keith refers to two deputies as Kitsis and Horowitz. Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz were the producers of Lost.
  • The movie teaser includes a brilliant Shout-Out when Veronica and Piz both realize "Neptune High... really DID sit on top of a Hellmouth."
  • Keith's newspaper contact, Loyd Blankenship, is named for an old-school hacker (who also goes by "The Mentor") and writer for GURPS Cyberpunk.
  • S3E16 has a scene where The Room (2003) is alluded to, though not mentioned by name. It's described as "the new Rocky Horror" and the Audience Participation of throwing spoons at the movie screen is explicitly mentioned. For bonus points, they're tossing a football back and forth while they're talking.
  • S3E17 has a Johnny Carson's Carnac the Magnificent when Veronica holds a name card to her forehead:
Veronica: The answer is Danny Cleaver's bag and all my time this weekend.
    Desmond: What?
Veronica: What are two things you didn't mean to take but did.
  • "Where's Wallace?"
  • In Spring Break Forever, the scene where the geeks play a game in the nightclub to see who can rack up the most rejections in one night is a reference to Rob Thomas's own Cupid, where Trevor has the singles group play the same game.
  • Matty Ross, a main character in season 4, is a teenage girl investigating her father's death who is taken under the wing of a world-weary older professional—just like the character of the same name in True Grit.
