Shout Out / The Vow

Go To

  • The story has more than one blatant reference to The Swan Princess, like the concept of the vow of everlasting love. Also, Lianne is an Expy of Odette to the point of quoting some of Odette's lines. For bonus points, she's called with the movie's title during her rule of Gongmen City.
    • As another reference to the same franchise, Lianne tells Shen a story that's an adaptation of the original Swan Lake. Word of God has it that it's included as a form of respect.
  • Shen tells Lianne a version of the legend of Chang'E and Houyi during the Moon Festival.
  • When Shen kills Po's mother, only to realize that she lured him and the wolves away from her hidden son, he thinks "Clever girl."
  • There are some elements from The Count of Monte Cristo included; a wedding is interrupted as the groom is accused of a crime (though the accusation is truthful in Shen's case) and driven away from his loved ones for years to suffer his punishment. He returns with a desire for revenge, blaming his loved ones of willingly abandoning him to his fate and moving on with their lives. Several songs from the Wildhorn-Murphy musical are recommended to be listened in certain parts. Also, Alicia Donovan has created in YouTube from the music "I Know Those Eyes/This Man Is Dead" a variation of Shen and Lianne's second confrontation after his return.
