- The first dream sequence (when Andrew hears Bligh's voice but can't see him) references by name the Nancy Carlstrom children's book Goodbye Geese, which Andrew's father apparently enjoyed quoting when summer turned to fall.
- Bligh always wears a Baltimore Ravens cap that he almost never takes off, and it's revealed in Litany that he despises the Cleveland Browns; this is a bit of Shown Their Work, as West Virginia has thriving Ravens, Browns, (and Steelers) fandoms that often spawn heated rivalries.
- Cody's favorite show is It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia; later, when he teaches Bligh how to work the DVR and they are snuggling on the couch together, the television gets paused on "Charlie Kelly in mid-yell at Sweet Dee." Although not named, the episode is supposed to be "The Nightman Cometh."
- He has a Skyward Sword wall-hanging in his and Andrew's shared room, whereas Andrew has a Carl Sagan poster.
- Cody is described as "what Dorian Gray must have looked like at Eton."
- Andrew's father is mentioned as having played golf with Jim Gilmore, who was governor of Virginia from 1998 to 2002.
- Stephen calls Cody "a jumped-up pantry boy," and quotes to Andrew a witticism from F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Love of the Last Tycoon; he and Andrew briefly discuss The Great Gatsby.
- A little obviously, "The Beast That Shouted 'Fuck' At the Heart of the World."
