Shout Out / Mr. Bogus

Go To

A list of Shout Outs that appeared in the animated series Mr. Bogus.

"Meet Mr. Bogus"

  • The way that Bogus tries to grapple against Ratty and Mole and Butch and Jake for possession of the diamond is near-similar to that of the beginning of Raiders of the Lost Ark. Heck, even the clothes that Bogus was wearing are identical to those worn by Indiana Jones, especially the jacket and the fedora. The only thing missing now is a boulder chase.
  • The claymation short shown after the commercial break and before the second act of the episode showed Bogus wearing an aviator's cap and using a fan to fly around the room. This is similar to how Snoopy, when in his persona as the World War I Flying Ace, would often fly around in his doghouse and pretend that it's his Sopwith Camel.

"Class Clown Bogus"

  • The way that Bogus starts the Food Fight in the cafeteria in the second act is reminiscent of the food fight scene from Animal House.

"Et Tu, Brattus?"

"Shop Around The Clock"

  • The episode's title is based on the 1954 Bill Haley song "Rock Around The Clock".

"Beach Blanket Bogus"

  • The episode title is a reference to the 1960s beach film Beach Blanket Bingo.

"No Snooze Is Good News"

  • The episode title is a pun on the phrase "No news is good news".

"Hipster Tripster"

  • In the third act, the scene in which Bogus tries to remove a huge egg from a nest, while dressed as a caveman, is a reference to the 1981 comedy film Caveman.
  • Also, Bogus rolling down the hill while trying to stop the egg is similar to what happened to Jon and Garfield in Garfield In The Rough.
  • The claymation short shown after the commercial break and before the end credits had Bogus end up getting beaten up different books, which ends with him ending up in a book about first aid and coming out all covered in bandages while laying on a hospital bed, a la the ending for It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World.

"Museum Madness"

  • The way that the cobra uses her eyes to hypnotize Bogus is similar to Kaa's method of hypnosis in The Jungle Book.

"Lights, Camera, Bogus"

  • The title of the episode is a pun on the phrase "Lights! Camera! Action!"

"Bogus In Bogus Land"

  • The movie that Bogus and Tommy go to see in the second act is an obvious parody of Robin Hood, complete with several references from other Robin Hood movies thrown in as well, such as the Disney version (the archery tournament and Bogus shooting an arrow to split another in half) and Robin Hood: Men in Tights (Bogus shooting three arrows at once).

"Good Sport Bogus"

  • The way that Bogus looks directly at Tommy through the wrong end of the camera lens is an obvious reference to that of Disney's The Little Mermaid when Scuttle was looking at Ariel and Flounder through the wrong end of his telescope.

"Computer Intruder"

  • The first act, where Bogus commandeers a space shuttle to face off against the Meteor Goons contains numerous references to the 1984 science fiction film The Last Starfighter.

"Babysitting Bogus"

  • The wrestling match between Bogus and the baby in the first act is a reference to that of the match between Rocky and Apollo Creed from Rocky III.
  • During the second act, when Bogus, Ratty, and Mole enter the television set, the first program references several cop shows such as Dragnet, CHiPs, and The Fall Guy while the second program is an obvious nod to Godzilla.

"Bookstore Bogus"

  • The first act contained a reference to Daredevil.
  • The Star Trek references used in the second act.

"Bad Luck Bogus"

  • The brief bit where Bogus gives himself a Balloon Belly while eating the Dagwood Sandwich one layer at a time, is similar to what happened to Templeton in the animated adaptation of Charlotte's Web.
  • Also, the title of the episode is a reference to the Tex Avery short Bad Luck Blackie, which in turn was named after the radio show Boston Blackie.

"Totally Bogus Video"

"Bogus Private Eye"

  • The whole idea with the weasels acting like crime lords and mobsters is sort of like The Godfather.
  • The scene where Brattus shoots pool while blindfolded is a lot like a similar scene from Disney's The Cat from Outer Space.

"Bogus To The Rescue"

  • The episode contains numerous references to that of Superman.

"Roam Away From Home"

  • The episode's title is a reference to the phrase "Home away from home".

"Nightmare On Bogus Street"

  • The episode title is a reference to the 1984 Horror film A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984).
  • The way Werewolf Bogus freaks out when he sees his reflection in the mirror is similar to how the title character of Ruby-Spears' Fangface would act whenever he saw his reflection in a mirror while in werewolf form.

"Waterboy Bogus"

  • Bogus getting swallowed by the orca is similar to what happened to Jonah or Pinocchio.
  • The penguin waiter who serves lunch to Bogus and Brattus is a reference to the penguin waiters from Mary Poppins.
  • In the third act, when Bogus joins the sea horse race and turns his head into a horse's head, the horse head actually bears a small resemblance to that of Falkor the Luckdragon.
  • Also, the very end of the episode, in which Ratty chases after Mole, to teach him a lesson for poking him in the backside with his trident, is similar to that of the end of Episode 4 of the Little Lulu anime, in which Tubby starts chasing after Lulu, after the former exposes the latter as the guilty party for stealing the food that he had hidden previously.

"Kung Fu Campout"

  • The Star Trek references that were first used in "Bookstore Bogus" make a return in the second act, especially the return of Bogus's version of the U.S.S. Enterprise. This time, Ratty and Mole serve as members of the space crew.

"Battle Action Bogus"

  • The entire episode, being that it's entirely focused on the army, appears to reference old army movies, such as The Dirty Dozen, Apocalypse Now, and Private Benjamin.

"Is There A Bogus In The House?"

"Once Upon A Bogus Time"

  • The episode title is a pun on "Once upon a time".
