• Melissa's spell "Azarath Metrion Zinthos!" is the one Raven uses in Teen Titans.
• There's also the opening chant of Melissa's summon spell, which is Dragon Slave from Slayers ("Darkness beyond twilight, Crimson beyond blood that flows, Buried in the stream of time...")
• Turning into a pixie (Kazon, Nistrim, Seska) are from Star Trek. After which she repeatedly says "Hey! Listen!".
• In fact, Mel seems to love invoking this trope. Three guesses what game she's referencing here.
• The principal of Charybdis contacts the coven through dolls that obviously represent the witches. Cerise has a Starscream figure.

• There are many references to the Magical Girl genre, especially Sailor Moon and its tropes. Melissa herself is cute, and a witch, but after acquiring a wand from a cat, has an unwanted transformation into a very stereotypical Cute Witch. We later learn Dakota was previously a Magical Girl Warrior and Anastasia was her main foe Queen Obscuria. After a hostile takeover of the Shadow Kingdom, she sent four generals and their minions repeatedly to the same town to collect energy from Dakota's friends and acquaintances; practically mirroring Queen Beryl in the Sailor Moon anime...
