Shout Out / Kingdom of Loathing

Go To

Pretty much everything in the Kingdom is a reference to something or other. Here are a few of the notable ones:

  • The ever-recurring numbers 11, 23, and 37 are all references:
    • Eleven is "ridiculous" and "not even funny," as a reference to the song "Time Zones" by Negativland.
    • Twenty-threenote  is a reference to the Twenty-Three Enigma of Discordian belief, and possibly the Illuminatus! books as well.
    • Thirty-seven (in a row) is, of course, a reference to Clerks.
  • The description of the Accordion Thief skill Crab Claw Technique references The Far Side: "This is my accordion. Welcome to hell."
  • Several Special Challenge Paths act as Prestige Classes that allow your character to assume a role or a scenario straight out of a movie or different game.
    • Liscence to Adventure turns you into James Bond.
    • Path of the Plumber turns you into Mario, specifically the Super Mario RPG iteration. This deserves special mention, as there's a Running Gag where the Mario-based minigame is locked out, either the secret arcade version is out-of-order, or the handheld version takes two "QQ" batteries.
    • The Source turns you into Neo.
    • Nuclear Autumn is basically KOL-ified Fallout Shelter.
    • Pocket Familliars turns the game into Pokémon.
  • Every cake item shoves in a lyric from the band Cake in the description.
