Shout Out / Fudge

Go To

  • Superfudge:
    • Fudge mentions that he loves watching The Muppet Show, Sesame Street, and The Electric Company. In reprints, Fudge instead mentions that he loves watching Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network.
    • Peter, Fudge and their friends go to the theater to watch Superman. As the book was first published in 1980, they are likely referring the the 1978 film Superman: The Movie. While this was never changed to a newer film in updated printings of the book, it could be interpreted to younger readers as a more modern Superman film.
    • Grandma sings the song "Toot, Toot, Tootsie (Goo' Bye!)" to Tootsie. Peter mentions that the song was popular when Grandma was younger (it came out in 1922), implying that she's likely in her sixties or seventies (at least when the book was first published).
    • Fudge references two Dr. Seuss books at one point, Green Eggs and Ham and One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish.
    • At one point, Peter and Alex watch a Spider-Man cartoon on Saturday morning. Presumably, this was meant to be reruns of the 1967 Spider-Man series, as no other Spider-Man cartoons existed in 1980. Like the Superman example above, newer readers could interpret it as being a more recent Spider-Man cartoon.
  • Fudge-a-Mania:
    • When Anne agrees to let Sheila babysit Fudge, Sheila starts to sing "Heigh-Ho".
    • At one point, Libby wears an oversized Snoopy T-shirt that comes down to her knees.
    • When Grandma Muriel and Buzzy Senior announce that they've decided to get married, they sing a few lines from "Some Enchanted Evening".
  • Double Fudge:
    • Sheila mentions having read a book about a girl who doesn't speak after she has a traumatic event occur to her. Could count as Parental Bonus, considering that book's subject matter.
    • For reasons never really explained, Fudge thinks it's bad luck to say Harry Potter's name out loud. He seems to be confusing Harry with the series's villain.
    • Peter mentions that when someone asks Fudge's myna bird Uncle Feather "What's up?", he responds by repeating "Wassup? Wassup?".
    • Fudge's new friend is a wealthy boy named Rich Potter, often referred to as "Richie." Peter usually refers to him as "Richie Richest."
    • When cousins Flora and Fauna are deciding on a nickname for their little brother Farley (as Fudge is already taken), Peter suggests calling him "Mini Farley." The twin cousins initially mistake it for "Minnie."
    • When the Hawaiian cousins come over to the Hatchers' apartment and sleep in the living room, Peter is annoyed with it and comes up with the hypothetical possibility if The Simpsons were on that night and he wanted to watch it.
    • Near the end, Fudge tells his cousins Flora and Fauna that their impending baby sibling could be a panda baby, he says "You never know. Mrs. Little had a mouse. She named him Stuart."
    • At one point, Fudge is shown to be building a rocket out of LEGO.
    • While Howie is channel surfing, he skips past both CNN and a rerun of an Oprah special.
    • At one point, Peter and Fudge play Monopoly. Chapter 13 is also titled "Do Not Pass Go".
