Much like the Beetlejuice cartoon, this webcomic is full of Shout Outs, and the list is growing steadily longer. Thus far, they include the following:
- Several of the chapter titles are quotes from sources ranging from Shakespeare to Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory.
- While Betelgeuse is caged, he makes a reference to The Shining.Betelgeuse: All work and no play makes BJ a dull boy.
- Lydia dresses as the Bride of Frankenstein for Halloween. (Betelgeuse even gives her the hairdo.)
- In the same chapter, a little banner on one panel inquires, "Boys and girls of every age, would you like to see something strange?"
- Also in that chapter, in response to Lydia's remark that she's good at understanding things that don't necessarily make sense to other people, Betelgeuse mutters under his breath, "You know nothing, Lydia Deetz."
- Lydia and Betelgeuse watch The Exorcist in an early chapter.
- Betelgeuse takes Lydia to a carnival for her birthday and they visit "Spoopy's House of Jumpscares," which is a triple riff on the game Spooky's Jump Scare Mansionnote , an internet meme, and a well-known photo of some haunted house guests.
- In addition to seeing the Pumpkin King himself, Lydia and Betelgeuse visit Spiral Hill.
- One of the prizes at the Neitherworld carnival is Golden Freddy.
- Upon leaving for college, Lydia assures her father that her luggage is sufficient, explaining that her suitcase "is bigger on the inside."
- The first thing which creates a bonding moment for Lydia and her new roommate Prudence is the fact that they both love The Cure.
- Betelgeuse takes Lydia to visit a character he calls Doc, whom he describes as being sort of his godfather. The artist confirms that the use of this descriptor is a deliberate Shout-Out to another Beetlejuice fan project.
- Upon arrival at Doc's tower, Lydia is startled by the size of the place. Betelgeuse snarks that it's so big, "the guy must be compensating for something."
- When they knock on the door to Doc's tower, they're greeted by a shuffling eyeball which determines their identity. Naturally, Betelgeuse greets it by inquiring, "What's up, Doc?"
- The Doc is also admitted to be inspired by Vincent Price.
- The Tarot Cards seen at the end of chapter 17 are obviously meant to be part of the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, probably the best-known tarot deck.
- In chapter 20, Lydia surprises Betelgeuse by being able to read Latin fluently. When he expresses this surprise, she gives him an impish grin and replies, "What, like it's hard?"
