  • The artwork and lines of Hermes give the impression of her being a duelist. She's even voiced by one (well, two alternate dimension counterparts of each other).
    • Her remodel is the logical conclusion, namely a rigging that resembles a motorcycle (jetski). One of the planes being summoned appears from a ring of light, exactly as how Monsters in 5D's were summoned. Not only that, it brings the seiyuu reference full circle as both Yuzu and Serena, the ARC-V characters voiced by Yuuna Inamura, also became Riding Duelists when they participated in duels in the 5D's-based Synchro Dimension.
  • There are some Gundam references by some of the girls.
  • Bailey says she came from Planet Usamin (Bunny in English).
  • Cleveland, Prinz Eugen, Wichita, Graf Zeppelin, Washington, Köln (retrofit only), Littorio, and Sheffield (Muse) wear the "Deal With It" sunglasses, complete with the pixelation depending on circumstances for each character. As a bonus, the official Azur Lane Discord server's picture used to be Enterprise with these same glasses (it was changed to an animated icon of Enterprise after an update allowed such things).
  • When starting the Auto function, there is a picture of Glowworm looking at a butterfly with Aqua's expression while unaware of a torpedo heading straight for her, complete with a suspended To Be Continued.
  • Takao's lines reference various fictional Samurai such as Kenshin Himura, Hajime Saito, and Goemon Ishikawa XIII.
  • Even before the official collaboration with World of Warships began, some ships were given skills that clearly reference commander skills or signal flags from the other game. For example, WoWS players will immediately recognize Belfast's "Burn Order" skill that makes her HE shells set the enemy on fire more often as "Demolition Expert.", while Glowworm's "Ramming Speed" skill, which causes her to do more ramming damage and take less in return, corresponds to the effects of the "Hotel Yankee" signal flag, or Atago's "Arsonist" which acts similar to Belfast's but with extra burn damage bonus and having the English version being named after a World of Warships achievement medal for destroying an enemy ship with more than 50% fire damage. There are also a few nods to Asian memes/nicknames, like Cleveland being called "dad."
  • One of the artworks featured in the loading screens shows Belfast holding shells in her fingers in a manner quite similar to how a certain other silver haired maid holds her throwing knives.
  • Some ships' artworks are rather similar to certain characters from the Fate franchise. Funnily enough, Manjuu even get some of the cast of the franchise in as well.
"Try as you might, only King George can pull it out."
  • Vestal has the same boob ribbon as that of Hestia from Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?. As a bonus, a Vestal is a virgin priestess bound to a 30-year vow of chastity who serves at the temple to Vesta, the Roman equivalent of the Greek goddess Hestia. The English version outright calls her swimsuit skin "Revigorating Hestia".
  • Kawakaze says "War... war never changes" whenever she starts a mission.
  • Hobby's Little Idol Schoolgirl skin makes her look like Kizuna AI.
  • Prototype Bulin MkII will say "My drill is the drill that pierces the heavens!" whenever her "skill" (which does nothing otherwise) activates. Her little sister Universal Bulin will similarly "say my wrench is the wrench that will pierce the earth!"
    • Enterprise's Friendly line also quotes Simon during the Distant Finale.
    • During the Universe in Unison event, the Commander has the option of saying "Believe in the me who believes in you!" to Baltimore on Juustagram.
  • If Benson is disappointed in you, she will quote Sailor Moon's In the Name of the Moon speech at you.
  • Hood quotes Shakespeare in her love quote, then asks you to read the passage she quoted to her.
  • The name of Ironblood, the Fantasy Counterpart Culture to Nazi Germany, is a direct translation of Sangvis Ferri, the villainous faction in Girls' Frontline. Both are named in reference to, with the former directly after, Otto von Bismarck's Blood And Iron speechnote
  • Several from the Neptunia crossover event:
  • Cassin's default pose looks like the poster for The Terminator.
  • Harutsuki bears a striking resemblance to Reimu Hakurei.
  • Much of York's dialogue mentions the Force.
    • In "Universe in Unison" stage 4, Cleveland says "This is where the fun begins".
  • Z21 looks like Renge Miyauchi.
  • Yamashiro's "Winter Offensive" skin shows her guns emerging from the Gate of Babylon.
  • The game makes many references to JoJo's Bizarre Adventure:
    • Karlsruhe's basic skin has her pose in a similar fashion to Rudol von Stroheim.
    • The default art and skill icons of BB Kaga just scream of DIO.
    • In the Lunar New Year Celebration mini-event, Atago asks if the Commander has two right hands and is a Stand user.
    • Several of Jamaica's lines are JoJo references, either word for word or modified.
    • In Ooshio's secretary quest line, one scene has her bringing sweets to Yuudachi, who's sleeping. She wakes her up by putting them near her nose, which prompts a now-Awake Yuudachi to exclaim that she is "as awake as a Pillar Man."
    • One of Nicholas's retrofit lines is "Nicholas has a dream.. a dream of becoming a statue."
    • The warning for Auto mode has the anime's infamous To Be Continued arrow.
    • Marco Polo's stranger line makes a reference to DIO's "You're approaching me?" lines.
  • One of the available chat emote is Zuikaku doing the ZuiZui Dance.
  • Most of Ryuujou's lines quote various Kamen Riders' catchphrases. Even both of her old and new art poses are mimicking Ichigo, Ryuki and Black RX.
    • Baltimore is just a passing through Kansen. Let's hope that she isn't destined to be the destroyer of worlds. Belfast uses the same line in the anime when she comes out of nowhere and stops Zuikaku from killing Enterprise.
  • Atlanta's introduction in English includes "Kept you waiting, huh, Commander?"
  • In Shiranui's questline, your first dialogue option responding to her comments about shopkeeping includes "CAPITALISM, HO!" as an option.
  • When enhanced, Fu Shun informs you that her power level can still get higher, and when she gets MVP, she informs you that this isn't even her final forminvoked, though if she reaches low HP, she considers using it. Her Friendly line is also one to the Slaps Roof of Car meme.
  • Ayanami getting nicknamed "Ayaya" is a meme from Kiniro Mosaic — the "proper" shortened form of her name is clearly Aya, which then leads to the Ayaya meme in the first place. Ayaya was already a popular memetic Fan Nickname for Ayanami, too, and the official Discord hosts a couple of variations of the AYAYA emote including Ayanami.
  • In the Winter's Crown event, Scharnhorst reacts to getting shelled from afar by Duke of York with a line borrowed straight out of R. Lee Ermey's mouth in Full Metal Jacket.
"Who's the slimy little crumpet-munching island ape bastard out there who just signed her own death warrant?!"
  • When Purifier is defeated at the end of the Ink-Stained Steel Sakura event, her last line is, "Purifier's blasting off agaaaaaaaain!"
  • Ashigara's design may have partly being influenced by her KanColle counterpart, namely that her KC counterpart is sometimes joked to be a DJ because of her Kai Ni pose makes her look like she's manning a turntable...while AL Ashigara wears a pair of headphones.
  • Sendai looks like a much aged up Senko-san and even has her hairpin. Her retrofit skill mechanically resembles the flares in a certain World of Warships PVE mamp.
  • Ikazuchi makes a number in the Kizuna AI collab event:
    • "I see, I see! So this is what 'rushing B' looks like"
    • "Oh I know! This is what they call 'the dark souls of video games! There's no way I can figure this out!"
  • SP3 of the Kizuna AI collab is a massive shoutout to Player Unknowns Battlegrounds (which Kizuna played on a number of occasions), complete with the ships being dropped into the level from the air and the play space slowly being reduced by a wall of electricity, with ships taking damage if they stay in the areas past the Advancing Wall of Doom.
  • One of the pieces of furniture added in the "Manju Daycare" set is a carpet with numbers on it. It's description?
  • The road trip skin released for Enterprise during EN's first anniversary shows her giving a Vulcan salute, and her acquisition line even has her saying, "Live long and prosper." Made all the more sweet by the fact that the Enterprise from Star Trek was named after the real-life USS Enterprise.
  • The "Empyrean Tragicomedy" event features stage names based on locations from Dante's The Divine Comedy. Stage A-1/C-1 is named Vestibule of Hell, stage A-2/C-2 is named Purgatorio, and stage A-3/C-3 is named Cocytus.
  • Giulio Cesare quotes her namesake in her victory quote:
    "Veni, vidi, vici!"note
  • The introduction of the Sardegna Empire also introduced main batteries that fire Semi Armor Piercing (SAP) rounds, which combined with Zara's "SAPHE" skill, references the impending inclusion of the Italian cruiser tech tree into World of Warships (In public testing as of the "Empyrean Tragicomedy" event), and them being equipped with SAP shells in lieu of regular HE shells.
  • Albacore's headband includes a targeting reticle that resembles a scouter. In her dorm idle animation, it even gets used as one, complete with Albacore looking at the readout and freaking out.
  • The attack aftermath scene in 2nd episode of the anime has some scenes recreated from Pearl Harbor.
  • There's also a recreation of Kisaragi's sinking in anime version of KanColle.
  • Formidable's time/clock motifs and gothic dress is a shout out to Date A Live's Kurumi.
  • The visual design of hololive event is basically pulled from Minecraft (plus the day/night mechanic and the lava mechanic). This makes sense given that the whole thing is their old Minecraft server (specifically the one involved in the Resistance saga, given that they're using the underground Resistance base as their home in the Mirror Sea) being pulled into Mirror Sea.
  • One equipment skin introduced during the event is a skin for dive bombers called "Mach 2.42 Bermbew Sprawt", which turns them in to F-22 Raptors with bamboo sprouts stuck on them, with the name referencing the aircraft's maximum speed. Fubuki Shirakami has a skill that automatically applies this skin onto any aircraft placed in her dive bomber slot, referencing various instances in her Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown playthrough where she repeatedly committed controlled-flight into surface vessel.
  • After Sirens wreck Ayame Nakiri’s castle, Natsuiro Matsuri tries to comfort her by saying they can build a new one with blackjack and booze.
  • Minato Aqua's Marine Maid skin has Microsoft Windows 10 BSOD screen present.
  • As a reminder that Bulins are Joke Characters, using their skill in battle will result in this famous line:
  • Marblehead's design bears some similarities to the main character of the infamous doujin "Emergence", especially her pre-gyaru appearance seen on her ID badge. However, her artist denies it's a reference.
    • Her "Boxing Girl!" skin has "Union Fantasy" on the leggings. What a Deep Dark Fantasy.
  • Sovetskaya Rossiya's battle start quote "Commence bombardment! We will bury them!" and Chapayev's skill activation "Scorched earth!" in EN Server. Totally not references to Red Alert 2. Kirov has a skill named "Kirov reporting" (all areas) which bombs the enemy, clearly a nod to the same-named bomber blimp from the same game. Totally not references to Red Alert 2.
  • One of Casablanca's lines (at least in the EN version) is "Here's looking at you, kid."
  • Reno is a walking collection of superhero comic references. She has repulsor gauntlets, a skill called "Reno Reactor" and "I am Reno" as a line. Another line has her introduce an "Ibranium Shield", while a third says "I could do this all day." Yet another line has "with great power comes great responsibility". The same line with the "Ibranium Shield" also talks about a "Chiropterang" and a "Worpher Belt".
  • La Galissonnière's second skill's icon is near-identical to that for the "Main Battery Reload Booster" consumable, referring to her being the lowest tier French ship with said consumable.
  • Richelieu looks a lot like Erina Nakiri and her swimsuit skin has a pose that looks like one Light uses in Death Note.
  • One of Seattle's lines is "Oh yeah, it's all coming together!"
  • Drake's chibi has a dancing animation similar to Helltaker.
  • One of Odin's animation has her firing a Getsuga Tensho.
  • One of the furnitures for the hospital themed set has the Infarmary contracting Doctor Rhodes.
  • And a different one mentions how one patient woke up from a coma after nine years.
    • In "Inverted Orthant"'s cutscene for completing B3/D3, Prinz Heinrich says, "Why am I here? Just to suffer?"
  • In Aurora's Juustagram post, Chang Chun asks if this is how it feels to chew Jive Gum.
  • Shigure's Juustagram post of Yukikaze sleeping has the latter telling the former to Delet This, which leads to the former using the Navy SEAL Copypasta.
  • Monarch's Juustagram post title includes "Our names lost in time, like... tears in rain".
  • Hunter's entire design and voice lines makes her a walking Bloodborne reference.
  • Similar to the above point about the Nasuverse, several characters look like they came from Honkai Impact 3rd.
    • Acasta ~ Seele
    • Avrora ~ Kiana
    • Bismarck ~ Durandal
    • Ikazuchi and Inazuma ~ the Olenyeva twins
    • Noshiro ~ Mei especially after becoming Herrscher of Thunder
    • Vestal ~ Theresa
    • Wichita ~ Himeko
  • Kii's chibi animation is that of the longsword from Monster Hunter: World.
  • Cleveland refers to herself as a "knight of the sea" in her Acquisition line, and she forms a basketball team with her sisters in her secretary quest. The city of Cleveland hosts a pro basketball team: The Cleveland Cavaliers.
  • Baltimore Muse's chibi animations include Michael Jackson moves.
  • Monarch bears a certain amount of resemblance to an older original shipgirl design for HMS Orion (1910), who was the leader of the previous battleship class to have a member named Monarch.
  • The Well-Stocked Bookcase furniture item given in the mail to complement Z23's The Eyecatch in the Rye? skin references The Mystic Archives of Dantalian.
"I ask of thee, art thou mankind?" Nay, I am but a manjuu, and this is just a normal bookcase.
  • In the Christmas 2020 Juustagram, Sims says "Sister, I was born on the naughty list, molded by it."
  • The New Year's 2021 Juustagram has an entry of Long Island pretending to be a kagami mochi. The Commander asks her not to destroy NY City with her puffiness, while Long Island replies that no one would ever choose this as the form of their destructor.
  • New Jersey is almost a dead ringer for KOS-MOS.
  • During the Azure Anthem event, one of the Juustagram posts has one of the Futami twins dressing as a Bulin ship when her sister decides to join in. Your response to this is, "This is getting out of hand. Now there are TWO of them"!
  • One of Cheshire's comments on Strasser's Juustagram post references one of Wesker's hammiest quote, " I am one step closer to complete. global. caturation".
  • The Upon the Shimmering Blue event has the Commander mentioning Running in the 90's to Shimakaze's post. Cue the, "NANI!? KANSEN DORIFTO!?" meme
  • During Shimakaze's memory when the Commander takes her to an amusement park, she immediately runs off on her own. When the Commander asks her if she's really going to go by herself, Shimakaze's response is "Gotta go fast!"
  • The background of Maillé-Brézé's Halloween skin has her watching the Azur Lane equivalent of The Shining, with Bismarck and Hood erecting the film's most iconic scene (cue the HEEERE'S BISMARCK! line).
  • The event Rondo at Rainbow's End and its concurrent mini-event Tales from The Count's Castle are full-on homage to vampire and gothic genre works, to wit:
    • The event's title art is reminiscent to Devil May Cry 5's
    • As with the title, the mini event has the Commander and the High Seas Fleet girls (plus Sheffield and U-47, with Akashi and Eugen behind the scenes) play a live action role playing of Castlevania.
    • The skins for the girls themselves: in addition to Lutzow's reference mentioned in the Nasuverse section (as well as the Castlevania's own Carmilla), Seydlitz's skin is that of a member of the Belmont clan, and Sheffield's is called Bulletborne with the appearance of the female!Hunter.
  • The Mercedes-AMG One that Shinano is posing on in her Moonlit Chrome skin is adorn in the same silver/teal Petronas colour scheme as Mercedes-Benz's Formula 1 cars, a nod to the One not only having technology derived from the manufacturer's experience in F1, but also the car being powered by a derivative of the 1.6L twin-turbo V6 engine that powered the F1 team's 2015 entry, the W06 Hybrid.
  • One of the scenes in Pledge of the Radiant Court is titled ‘Guess Who’s Back, Back Again.’
  • Parallel Superimposition:
    • The design of the OFS Epimetheus, the boss of stage A3/C3, is clearly based on the Alicorn from Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown, though it's had the main railgun replaced with three superfiring triple turrets.
    • Stage B3/D3 is named "The Final Countdown", the fact that it's also the title of a sci-fi movie based on US naval aviation in WW2 and time travel shenanigans allowing modern US Nimitz-class carriers to change the course of history can't be a coincidence, particularly since there was extensive dialog in earlier cutscenes about the characters watching a remake/alternate history version of the movie (starring a shipgirl, no less).
  • Houston's unique augment, named Houston's Liftoff, is clearly based on the Houston Astros' logo.
