Under The Queen's Umbrella is a Korean Drama, set during the Joseon Dynasty albeit under a fictionalized, anachronistic setting of it. The series is available to stream on Netflix internationally.

Queen Regent Hwaryeong hasn't had it easy. Her four younger sons couldn't care less about their statuses and her husband's seven other sons and their concubine mothers means she's usually running around trying to keep her place in the palace. But when her eldest son the Crown Prince dies due to an illness suddenly everything changes; now his position is up for grabs, and the concubines (along with her mother-in-law, the Queen Dowager) will do anything to place their own prince to be next-in-line. Now Hwaryeong must whip up her sons in shape to take their brother's place or else they're all in danger.

Under The Queen's Umbrella provides examples of:

  • Awesome Moment of Crowning
  • Greater-Scope Villain: The Queen Dowager is amazingly both this AND the Big Bad.
  • Outliving One's Offspring: What kicks off the main plot of the series is the death of Hwaryeong's eldest son.
    • All of the deposed queen's sons, except one, are assassinated in order to prevent any possibility of them retaking the throne.
  • Parents as People: A royal example. Hwaryeong does her best to be patient with her younger sons as well as the other princes but boy, do they test it.
  • Rags to Riches: Consort Tae was a mere court girl until the King found her hot enough to bed and produce Prince Bogum. She may not be queen but it's still a life leagues better than where she was.
  • Really Gets Around: Other than his official wife, King Yi Ho has nine cocubines; subsequently he has 11 sons, though only 10 are eligible for Crown Prince as his youngest is barely in his pre-teens.
  • Succession Crisis: When the Crown Prince dies (Assassinated by Physician Kwon), his place as next-in-line becomes up for grabs. And everyone rushes to place their desired prince there.
