Elodie (center), Moe (left) Tabitha (right)

Elodie (Brianna Hildebrand) is the perfect blend of awkward and shy that would lead nobody to expect she's a shoplifter. Though she comes to a new city with her head down, in hopes of nothing but getting help from her unexplained trauma, her new friends Moe and Tabitha ensure that her life from here on out will be nothing but eventful.

A Netflix Original, its first season was in 2019. The second, in 2020, was announced to be the last.

Contains examples of:

  • Academic Athlete: Implied for Moe, who is a surprisingly good student as well as being on the school track team. Downplayed, as neither of these aspects are discussed at length during the show.
  • Actor Allusion: Kat Cunning (who plays Elodie's girlfriend, Sabine) was allowed to sing her own songs on the show, under the guise that her character also be a prolific musician.
  • All Gays are Promiscuous: Inverted. Out of the main trio, it's the straight girls that are sexually experienced, and the lesbian that's a clueless virgin at first. The other two lesbian women on the show aren't promiscuous either.
  • Badass Adorable: Elodie's pretty geeky as a person, although lest we forget the scene where they trash Brady's car, she doesn't seem to take any shit when it matters.
  • Bonding over Missing Parents: Elodie and Moe, in a solemn-yet-humorous manner. "Shout-out to deadbeat dads."
  • But Not Too Black: Discussed by Tabitha and Marquise, one of the only other Black students at school (with darker skin than hers). He notes she passes the "brown paper bag test" (i.e. her skin is lighter than that), and would have expected she wouldn't have been racially profiled while shopping, causing her to be falsely accused of shoplifting.
  • Camp Gay: Played straight (pun intended) with AJ, Elodie's flamboyant classmate.
  • Childhood Friends: Moe and Tabitha, whose paths sadly diverged as they grew into adolescence. They're friends again, but the friction is still there.
  • Closet Key: Zoey was this to Elodie, though they didn't become a couple in the end. Doubles as Did Not Get the Girl from Elodie's perspective..
  • Coming-Out Story:
    • Subverted. It's revealed Elodie is gay when she mentions a girl she liked to her friends, and the pair accept it casually without hesitation. Her family knows already. She never formally comes out.
    • Played straight though with Jillian, who's closeted initially but eventually comes out as gay to her parents.
  • Coming of Age Story: Of course, for all three protagonists of the show.
  • Commonality Connection: The entire reason the main trio became friends was being the only teenagers at Shoplifters Anonymous.
  • Date Rape: Tabitha tries to stop things while having sex with Brady, but he won't listen. She breaks up with him, but doesn't want to press charges. In Season 2 she's still dealing with it, and gets worried that he may have also raped Kayla, his current girlfriend.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Elodie and Moe come up with no less sardonic quips than you'd expect from a group of struggling teenage girls.
  • Domestic Abuse: Tabitha and Brady. Also implied for Tabitha's parents, at least to some degree. Later it's revealed Brady is also abusive to his girlfriend after Tabitha. After she learns about this, Tabitha reveals all his abuse using messages and photos to their whole school.
  • Dude Magnet: Implied for Tabitha's mom, who jokingly tells her daughter that she had a wide array of ex-boyfriends at seventeen.
  • Friends with Benefits: Noah and Moe start off as a chaste variant of this, although it quickly becomes clear that a no-strings-attached situation isn't working out for either of them.
  • Fun Personified: Noah doesn't have any difficulty coming up with new silly, over-the-top ideas to make Moe laugh.
  • Free-Range Children: The main cast of girls seem to be able to go in and out of 18+ clubs at will.
  • Gaydar: Elodie thinks Jillian might be gay, but isn't sure, and feels things out (such as bringing up Sally Reid, the first LGBT astronaut). It turns out that Jillian is gay and interested in Elodie, though still closeted then.
  • High-School Sweethearts: Tabitha's wealthy, seemingly-lovestruck parents are this, and it's clear that they hope for their daughter and Brady to become the same.
  • Intergenerational Friendship: In a shocking turn of events, Moe begins thinking that Elodie's clueless dad is funny and cool. Elodie is appropriately confused.
  • Lipstick Lesbian:
    • Sabine, Elodie's love interest. She has long hair, plus generally feminine clothing.
    • Elodie fits more as "chapstick", with in-between clothing but also short hair. Jillian in Season 2 is also an example, with long curly hair and much the same style as Elodie.
    • It's downplayed by Sam. She has piercings, one side of her hair shaved and wears flannel and very little to no makeup but has long hair and looks more feminine in comparison to her crush Elodie.
  • Masculine Girl, Feminine Boy: Tough, guarded Moe and soft-hearted Noah.
  • Manic Pixie Dream Girl: Subverted. Elodie's exotic new girlfriend Sabine is free-spirited, outgoing and definitely far more experienced sexually, but it doesn't work out as they're too different.
  • Mentor in Queerness: Sabine acts as this to Elodie, although she also doubles as her Love Interest.
  • Motor Mouth: Elodie's gossipy friend Rachelle definitely has her moments where she can't seem to shut up.
  • My Sister Is Off-Limits: Moe is very unhappy when she finds out Tabitha and her brother Ben are getting involved and says it's really not okay (possibly because Tab's like her sister). She comes around eventually.
  • Odd Friendship: The main trio is quite a... peculiar mix to say the least.
  • Posthumous Character: Elodie's mother is already dead when the series begins. However, she's shown in flashbacks, and her loss affects things greatly.
  • The Precious, Precious Car: Brady's car, which ends up being mercilessly destroyed by three shoplifters.
  • Profiling: Tabitha is suspected of shoplifting by a white saleswoman who demands she empty her bag, whom she angrily notes began following her from the moment she'd come in. Her mom and she storm out. It turns out that her mom experienced the same thing in the past, and fellow Black student Marquise also gives her sympathy.
  • Sex Equals Love: Tabitha and Brady lost their virginities to each other after they first said "I love you". Lampshaded by Moe.
  • Smitten Teenage Girl:
    • Elodie's infatuated with Sabine to the point of actually leaving town with her without parental consent.
    • Implied for a younger Tabitha with Brady.
  • Sticky Fingers: Elodie has kleptomania, as does Tabitha (Moe took the fall for her brother Ben). They all meet in a Shoplifters Anonymous group. Unlike most examples, this is not Played for Laughs, but shown to be a destructive, debilitating addiction. Elodie especially struggles with it.
  • Town Girls: Elodie (Butch, though admittedly a feminine one), Tabitha (Femme) and Moe (neither).
  • Twofer Token Minority:
    • Elodie is mentally ill and gay.
    • Moe is a dark-skinned, likely Latina girl.
    • Tabitha is a mixed race girl, with a White father and Black mother.
  • Understanding Boyfriend: Noah is sweet, sensitive and highly supportive of Moe's interest and goals. This serves as contrast to Tabitha's boyfriend, Brady, who... well... definitely isn't.
  • Uptight Loves Wild: Elodie, for all her geekiness and inability to talk to girls, ends up with the reckless, artistic Sabine.
  • Virgin-Shaming: Elodie pretends to be in an active sexual relationship to avoid this. She ends up confessing after being caught in the lie.
  • Weakness Turns Her On: In-Universe. Noah jokes that Moe's attracted to the fact that he's not as academic.
