Thin Ice (or Tunn Is in Swedish) is a 2020 Conspiracy Thriller drama co-produced by France, Iceland and Sweden. It was produced by C More Entertainment with Sweden's TV4 and Yellow Bird. The show aired 8 episodes from February 8, 2020.

The show is set in Greenland where countries that border the Arctic region are due to sign a treaty that would forbid any more drilling in the region due to environmental concerns and to help the Greenlandic Inuit community. However, a Swedish research ship was targeted somewhere in Greenlandic waters with a Swedish official among those taken hostage by mysterious terrorists intending to make a statement regarding the treaty. But when Danish soldiers try to secure the ship, they find out that the crew and the official were spirited away somewhere else. Meanwhile, an investigation into the attack suggests that the terrorists have ties with a foreign country that wants to stop the treaty from being fully signed.

This series contains examples of:

  • Big Bad: Turns out that Washington DC is against the Arctic treaty being signed to stop drilling. They conduct False Flag ops to blame the Russians with help from a mole who's assigned to the local Politi from Denmark.
  • Bittersweet Ending: The terrorist conspiracy was halted and Katarina Iverson is arrested for her role in helping them. However, Danish politics gets a big blow when Greenland declares independence after the CIA covertly ensured that they would do so due to big oil deposits discovered. Katarina is later taken by Russian troops in a black ops rendition op back to Russian soil.
  • Global Warming: The treaty being signed in Greenland was being conducted there in order to forbid any more drillings. Mysterious events suggest that a foreign country doesn't want this to go through with evidence pointing towards Russia.
  • Hostage Situation: The Swedish ship crew, including the Swedish official, are taken off ship and are kept as hostages somewhere else.
    • Hostage Video:
    • The fifth episode appears to have an e-mail sent to the Swedish foreign minister with a screenshot made from a video that has armed men surrounding the missing official.
    • The sixth episode has a Greenlandic politician with a video of his daughter with a gunman who made her say in English that he needs to ensure that foreign drilling rights are awarded or she dies.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: The conference in Greenland has warnings that if Arctic countries do not agree to the treaty being signed or are hesistant to do so, then it would be hard for the Riksdag to legally allow Sweden to participate since there's a lack of united consensus.
  • Two Lines, No Waiting: The show has the various Arctic countries working together to investigate the raid on the Swedish research ship. Meanwhile, Politi officers in Greenland try to keep the peace as the treaty is being signed and investigate whether the terrorists or their hostages may have made it into Greenland secretly.
  • Western Terrorists: The unknown terrorists who raid the Swedish ship. The show suggests that some of them may have ties to Russia. Turns out that the mercenaries are actually Americans and are supported by the CIA.
  • Wham Episode:
    • The first episode showed that the hostages on the Swedish ship are no longer there.
    • The fifth episode has the terrorist send a ransom photo to demand the end of the treaty or the hostages will be executed.
  • Wham Line:
    • Fifth episode: Cancel the treaty and he will live.

Who wants Greenland's oil

Katarina reveals to Liv and Enok that the attacks conducted on Greenland were merely American-backed operations in order to stop the Russians from drilling in Greenland as they see it as a national security threat. To do this, the CIA tasked Katarina to oversee anti-Russian ops.

How well does it match the trope?
