The Voyage of the Mimi was a 13 part educational television program that aired on PBS in 1984. Starring a very young Ben Affleck as C.T., grandson of the crusty Captain Granville, as the two of sail around the Atlantic with several college age science students, learning various lesson about oceanography. A second series, in which the Granvilles attempt to find a lost Mayan city, was produced in 1988. There was to be a third series that focused on the Mississippi River but it was never made due to a lack of funding.

This series provides examples of:

  • Cool Ship: The Mimi a former French sailing ship converted into a science vessel.
  • Deserted Island: The Mimi briefly becomes stranded on one after a bad storm.
  • Fan Disservice: While suffering from hypothermia, Captain Granville has to strip down to his undershorts to cuddle with his crew to warm up. While it was the best procedure under the circumstances, seeing a sixty year old man naked and shivering isn't very pleasant.
  • Frigid Water Is Harmless: Averted. After getting caught in the storm, Captain Granville's clothes become soaked and he collapses from hypothermia.
  • Grumpy Old Man: Captain Granville, as crusty a sailor as they come, comes across as this at first, as he deals with a crew mostly inexperienced with sailing.
  • Intimate Healing: Non-sexual version when Granville has to cuddle with his crew while suffering from hypothermia
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Captain Granville points out that having a Deaf person on a boat is a safety risk, as they can't hear a call of alarm. Averted a moment later when the person he's talking to just taps a hammer on the railing to attract Sally's attention.
  • Reading Lips: Sally, who is Deaf, can also read lips.
  • Shown Their Work: Much of the details of sailing, and how to track and identify whales with 80's technology.
