In a small mining community in Nottingham, an ardent striker back in the day (Alun Armstrong) is killed. A local police officer (David Morrissey) is assigned to the case, which involves unraveling secrets from the small town, including those of his wife (Lesley Manville). The mini series aired on The BBC in June and July 2022.
Not to be confused with Men of Sherwood.
Tropes
- The '80s: There are constant flashbacks to the 1980s, during the miners' strike of 1984.
- Becoming the Mask: Daphne genuinely fell in love and chose to stay in Nottingham after the operation ended.
- Dead Star Walking: Both Joanne Froggatt and Alun Armstrong.
- Driven to Suicide: Raggett commits suicide via a Boom, Headshot!.
- Legacy Seeker: Raggett commits suicide to preserve his legacy rather than being questioned about the undercover operation.
- Patched Together from the Headlines: Subverted. As wild as it is, the two manhunts that happened in real-life really did happen only a short time apart and the investigations were simultaneous.
- Redemption Equals Death: After (albeit impulsively) murdering his daughter-in-law, Andy leaves a guilty and genuinely remorseful message, before being immediately killed by a crossbow bolt to the back of the head.
- Samus Is a Girl: The undercover cop is constantly described as a man and gendered male — but it's actually Daphne.
- Unrelated in the Adaptation: Kinda. The murderer in real-life killed his newlywed daughter; in this, the murderer is her father-in-law.
- Very Loosely Based on a True Story: Of Terry Rodger's murder of his daughter Chanel and Keith Frogson's murder, though many, many details are changed.
- Villain's Dying Grace: Another possible interpretation of Andy's death is this.
