Intro song

Readalong is a Canadian Edutainment Television series by Ken Sobol.

The show was a series of 10-minute episodes devoted to teaching children about how to spell words and what they mean. The main character in the series was a talking boot with eyes who simply went by the name Boot. Other characters on the show included Granny and a word salesman. As the series went on, other characters were added, such as Pretty the female shoe, Mr. Bones the skeleton, the talking Hole, and the Haunted House. The show also had a number of instances involving live-action children performing in sketches.

The series premiered on TV Ontario in 1975.

Readalong contains examples of:

  • Dem Bones: Mr. Bones, who was a living skeleton who would sing songs in the style of "Dem Bones".
  • Desert Skull: In the shot of "lots of room" in episode 3, which is of a desert, we see a horned skull buried in the sand.
  • A Dog Named "Dog": You had Boot the boot, Haunted House the haunted house, and hole the hole.
  • Fake Interactivity: Characters on the show would often have conversations with the audience, even pausing and talking back to them. Of course, since the show's from The '70s, it was as interactive as one would expect.
  • Haunted House: One of the characters introduced during the show's run. It was a house that could talk, and whose door acted as the mouth, opening and closing to whatever it said.
  • Living Clothes: Boot and Pretty the shoe.
  • No Fourth Wall: Expect to see plenty of instances of the characters talking directly to the audience.
  • One-Word Title: This trope seems to apply because "Readalong" was presented as one word.
  • Parasol Parachute: In the animated intro, the last kid to jump into the book pulls out an umbrella and slowly descends into said book.
  • Pink Is Feminine: Pretty was a female pink shoe.
