Tropes for the series:

  • Alliterative Name: Maria Mellick.
  • Elevator Failure: This happens in one episode, which led to real-life elevator repairmen writing in to complain of the technical inaccuracies involved.
  • Emergency Services: The series is about the Police Rescue Squad, which is currently a part of the NSW Police's State Protection Group as a rescue and anti-explosive unit.
  • Empty Quiver: A motor accident involving a lab courier leads to a vial of radioactive material going missing. It turns out a kid has stolen it, and the protagonists are able to track him down in time to stop him breaking it open to see what's inside.
  • The Show Must Go On: A theatre group convinces the Police Rescue Squad to quietly retrieve an injured backstage crew member on the lighting catwalk. The crew member is also hiding the extent of his injuries. They have a reason for this, as a theatre critic is watching and they're worried if his review of their play is too harsh, the government will cancel their upcoming funding.
  • Sinister Subway: One episode featured a search through various tunnels leading out of the rail tunnels for two kids who tired of a delay and decided to leave the train while it was still underground.
  • SWAT Team: Having been involved in several real-life controversial shootings at the time, the NSW Tactical Response Group is portrayed as somewhat Trigger-Happy to contrast with our heroes, who of course are 'good' police who only want to save lives.
  • Tagline: "When you work on the Police Rescue Squad, trouble finds you".
  • Take My Hand!: A corrupt police officer is dangling off of a building. His partner-in-crime tries to haul him up and gets yanked off the building to his death. Whereupon Steve, a trained rescue officer, does it by lying down on the roof and pulling him up with both arms.
  • Talking Down the Suicidal: Sergeant McClintock talks down a jumper, and they spend some time afterwards bonding. The next day, the man succeeds in killing himself, leaving a note for McClintock thanking him for the extra day of life.
