Graves was an Epix series which ran for two seasons (20 episodes) from 2016-2017. Nick Nolte plays Richard Graves. A controversial President who served from 1985-1993 regrets many of his decisions and policies which he believes have done serious damage to the country.
Tropes:
- Alternate History: Richard Graves was elected President in 1984 and re-elected in 1988. In real life these were Ronald Reagan’s second term, and George H.W. Bush’s only term. Neither are ever mentioned in the series and Donald Trump is the only contemporary President ever mentioned.
- The Atoner: The premise of the series is that Richard wants to make up for what he feels are horrible decisions he made that damaged the country.
- Broken Pedestal: Played with. Isaiah was a huge admirer of Richard all his life. But when he meets him he discovers he’s a very gruff and bitter man. However as the series progresses he comes to admire the new man he’s become and the goals he’s set to atone for his perceived past mistakes.
- Left Hanging: The series ends with Richard facing serious jail time, Maggie’s campaign in shambles, Olivia being offered a villa in Mexico, Isaiah being courted for political office, and Samantha going out on tour.
- No Party Given: Averted. Richard is a Republican, and Maggie is running as Republican for Senate.
- Scenery Porn: Lots of beautiful views of New Mexico.
