Tropes for the series:

  • Alliterative Name: Tangey Turner.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Alexis' plan to get out of the reality show involved faked Sanity Slippage by acting up in public, popping pills, cutting off her hair and arrested for breaking into a house which gets her put in a hospital ward. Sloane and Tangey are with her as Tangey's mother comes in, coldly saying the show is canceled and washes her hands of Alexis. As soon as she leaves, Alexis and Sloane start laughing as Alexis peels off her "haircut," showing it's a wig and tells the stunned Tangey the "pills" were candy, the house she "broke into" is owned by Sloane's friends and this whole thing was an act to get out of the show. Sounds good, right? That's until Alexis tells the nurse she's ready to "check out" only to be told she's under a court-ordered 72-hour psychiatric hold until the doctor can see her. Meaning it's going to get out that Alexis spent the weekend in a psych ward, a huge blow to her career.
  • Fake Guest Star: Danielle Campbell's Harper in Season 2 was in 9 of the season's 10 episodes despite not being a series regular.
  • Idiosyncratic Episode Naming: The show uses riffs on movie titles, like "Not So Easy A", "Prelude to a Diss", "Some Like It Not", "Crazy Scripted Love", and "Leaving Los Angeles".
  • Intimate Lotion Application: In "The Players", Harper makes her move on Rainer by asking him to rub lotion on her back while she's sunbathing at the poolside of their rehab club. And she doesn't ease off on the flirting once he starts doing it.
Harper: [about Rainer's hands as he rubs back] You know, it's a little soft.
Harper: Good, because I like a long hard [a staffer approaches them] ...massage.
  • Older Than They Look: Teen movie star heartthrob Rainer is told he can't do a stunt because he's only 20. Rainer responds he's really 23 and his mom/agent Nina "youthed me down" when he started out. This is the first clue to Alan figuring out that Rainer is his son.
    • Subverted as Nina has been having an affair for years with Rainer's best friend Jordan who she met when he was starring in a teen series, assuming he was a classic case of a twentysomething posing as a teenager. When Jordan's girlfriend, Tangey, finds out, she blackmails Nina to get her career going. When Nina first refuses, Tangey reveals that Jordan lied about his age to get that role and was really only sixteen when he and Nina began their affair, meaning Nina goes to jail if the truth comes out.
  • One-Word Title: Pilot.
  • Promoted Fangirl: The show was created as Star Vehicle for Bella Thorne and was an adaptation of one of her favorite books.
  • Spotting the Thread:
    • Nina Devon Tells Rainer that his father was a stuntman she had a fling with and died before he was born. In reality, Rainer is the product of an affair Nina had with producer turned studio chief Alan Mills who is also unaware of the truth. On a trip to China, Alan is surprised to find Rainer suffers from the same motion sickness he gets and had once had a drinking habit. When Rainer wants to do a stunt, Alan says he's only 20 but Rainer says he's really 23 and Nina just "aged me down" for his acting career. He mentions his father meeting his mom on a movie, Alan not remembering his "dad" but clearly how he and Nina were involved at the time. It pushes him to get a DNA test and confront Nina.
    • Later in the series, Rainer talks to a stuntman who knew his "dad" and reveals the man was actually gay. This leads Rainer to make the same conclusions as Alan to figure out the truth.
