Expedition Unknown is an American reality television series that airs on the Travel Channel. It stars Josh Gates of Destination Truth as he investigates mysteries and legends.
In February 2020, a spinoff titled Expedition X premiered.
Expedition Unknown provides examples of:
- Adventure Archaeologist: Josh Gates definitely qualifies, going to different parts of the world and even getting into some perillous situations in order to look for hidden treasure or evidence that a legend may be true.
- Bigfoot, Sasquatch, and Yeti: A 4-part special where Josh heads to the Himalayas to search for proof of the yeti, even returning to the same location where he found a yeti footprint years ago back when he was doing Destination Truth.
- Chupacabra: One episode is about investigating chupacabra attacks.
- Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: While Josh is far from a moron, he does act like a wise-cracking goof most of the time, but he's a member of The Explorers Club, has a degree in archaeology, and is a qualified SCUBA diver.
- Deadpan Snarker: Josh is this in pretty much every episode, usually in response to either the situations he finds himself in or the items he finds.
- In Medias Res: Most episodes begin with an exciting or dangerous scene of Josh participating in a certain part of the adventure before quickly switching to "One Week Ago" with Josh sitting at his desk, introducing the concept of the episode.
- Pungeon Master: Josh Gates, who seems to never miss an opportunity to crack a bad pun or two
- This Is Gonna Suck: Josh's usual reaction when he realises he has to do something very risky or insane in order to (hopefully) find whatever he's looking for.
- Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: One scene in the episode "Hunt for the Chupacabra" suggests Gates has a fear of roaches. Josh himself even lampshades this.
