Corona de Lágrimas (Crown of Tears) is a 2012 Mexican telenovela produced by José Alberto Castro for Televisa. It is a remake of Corona de Lágrimas, produced in 1965.
It tells the story of Regina, a woman who is thrown out of the house by her husband and forced to raise three children alone. Eighteen years later, the family lives a poor but stable life in Mexico City. The situation gets complicated when one of the children falls in love with a rich woman and disowns the family.
This telenovela has the following tropes:
- Awful Wedded Life: Patricio and Olga, mainly because of his lies and her jealousy.
- Beautiful All Along: Consuelo is portrayed by the script as an unattractive woman because she is always smudged with grease (she works in a car repair shop) and wears men's clothing (including a cap that covers her hair). Halfway through the telenovela, she undergoes a transformation and becomes a beautiful woman admired by everyone.
- Betty and Veronica: Patricio is Archie. Lucero (Betty) is kind but poor, while Olga (Veronica) is rich, spoiled, jealous and with an unpleasant personality. Patricio ends up leaving Lucero to marry Olga.
- Even Bad Men Love Their Mamas: Downplayed. Patricio is horrible to his mother for most of the telenovela, but in the end he regrets it and begs for her forgiveness.
- Gold Digger: A male example. Patricio loves Olga, but her money is also one of the main motivations for marrying her. In fact, Olga asks her father to give Patricio a job after they get married.
- Ungrateful Bastard: Patricio is ashamed of his mother and of being poor, despite all the sacrifice she made for him.
