Tropes for the series:

  • Alliterative Title:
    • Epic Election.
    • Epic Escape.
  • Badly Battered Babysitter: In exchange for Kelly taking them to a concert, Bucket and Skinner spend "Epic Babysitters" looking after Piper. The task proves overwhelming, frustrating, and humiliating, though they do come out on top in the end.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: Skinner actually has a Photographic Memory, yet he never thinks to exploit this for his schoolwork or similar pursuits, due to his partygoing nature.
  • Can't Get in Trouble for Nuthin': Skinner gets detention in "Epic Escape" early on, but Bucket has to make several deliberate attempts in order to join him.
  • Christmas Episode: "Epic Christmas" naturally. Bucket learns via Yet Another Christmas Carol that the holiday means much more than simple snow.
  • Cool Uncle: Three Pieces is Bucket's uncle, a former champion surfer, and the surf shop's boss.
  • Disguised in Drag: Bucket and Skinner try this in "Epic Girls" to sneak into Aloe's party. The plan hits a snag when it turns out that neither of them brought a change of clothes, leaving them stuck in drag.
  • The Dog Bites Back: Thanks to Aloe suffering some amnesia, the put-upon Sven gets to spend the subplot in "Epic Escape" ordering him around for a change.
  • The Drag-Along: The "Epic Adventures" part of the title is often at Skinner's insistence, leaving Bucket along for the ride whether he likes it or not.
  • Enemy Mine: Aloe needs another guy for a double date in "Epic Wingman" and the best option is Bucket. This alliance hits a snag when both girls find Bucket more appealing than Aloe, leading to both guys' competitiveness coming out.
  • Halloween Episode: "Epic Haunting" (though it got delayed from its intended October premiere). Bucket and Skinner try to impress their peers by spending a night in a supposedly Haunted House, but Aloe schemes to scare them out.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: Bucket and Skinner, of course. They do everything together to the point where it's an odd if an episode's plot doesn't have both of them involved.
  • I Want You to Meet an Old Friend of Mine: Ashley Argota's old True Jackson, VP co-star Matt Shively shows up in the "Epic Break-Up" two-parter as an old friend of Kelly's.
  • Idiosyncratic Episode Naming: The show names all of its episodes "Epic _______".
  • Intergenerational Friendship: Piper with Three Pieces, being someone who ends up giving him advice about his relationship problems.
  • Morality Pet: Piper is a conniving, snarky prodigy with a host of schemes and a desire to harass Bucket, but she has a soft spot for Three Pieces and has protected him from cons.
  • Oblivious to Love: Kelly never really picks up on Bucket's very obvious interest in her.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Aloe's real name is John Aloysius, but hardly anyone refers to him that way. Bucket and Three Pieces's real names are mentioned even less.
  • Only One Name: Though not mentioned often, Aloe is the only main character with a stated full name. Everyone else in the cast is only ever referred to by their first names or nicknames.
  • Only Sane by Comparison: A number of episodes highlight that, for all his own quirks and awkwardness, Bucket is far more grounded and practical compared to Skinner.
  • Petty Childhood Grudge: The whole reason that Jerk Jock Aloe hates Bucket so much is that, in Bucket's own words, he "cut him off on his board when he was five". It's led to their rivalry in the present, despite now being teenagers.
  • The Rival: Bucket and Aloe are both interested Kelly, and they regularly compete in assorted activities.
  • Surfer Dude:
    • Kelly is a female version of this.
    • Skinner is a traditional example, with a radical outlook and "Dude" being a preferred word. Bucket behaves somewhat similarly, but he's more subdued by comparison.
  • Uptown Girl: Skinner tries to pass himself off as wealthy in "Epic Crashers" to try to impress an heiress. Bucket does what he can to help, as well as try to keep Aloe from revealing the truth.
  • We Will Meet Again: "Epic Babysitters" is a rare time when Bucket and Skinner actually a score a decisive win against Piper. She rants that she will have her revenge for this.
