Series / Bret Maverick

Go To

A Short-Lived American Western that follows the titular character (James Garner) running a ranch and the Red Ox Saloon. It is the second sequel series to Maverick, after Young Maverick.

The show also features Ed Bruce, Ramon Bieri, John Shearin, David Knell, Richard Hamilton (actor), Stuart Margolin, and Darleen Carr.

It aired on NBC for one season.

Tropes for the series:

  • Alliterative Name: Barney Broomick in "Hallie".
  • Carnival of Killers: In "The Not So Magnificent Six", an author who writes westerns hires a Carnival of Killers to take out Bret, so he'd have an ending to his latest book that more exciting than "And he retired with a saloon and a cattle ranch".
  • Character Title: Bret Maverick.
  • Given Name Reveal: The editor, publisher, and main reporter of the newspaper in little Sweetwater, Arizona is known as M.L. Springer. It is revealed early on that the initials stand for Mary Lou, and the revelation is used repeatedly (when a young Teddy Roosevelt comes to town, for instance).
  • One-Word Title: Hallie.
  • Professional Sex Ed: Mentioned in the two-part episode "Faith Hope and Charity", where the townsfolk are setting up for a massive retaliatory scam in the saloon's upstairs rooms, and Jack waxes nostalgic over a certain bed, recalling that his father had hired a prostitute to show him how it's done. The wave of nostalgia renders the bartender useless for the task at hand as the scene is Played for Laughs.
