Atsuhime (篤姫, literally "Princess Atsu") is a 2008 Japanese series, the 47th NHK taiga drama. It's based on the 1984 novel Tenshō-in Atsuhime, which was based on the life of Tenshō-in, the wife of Japan's thirteenth shōgun.
The series starts with Atsuhime's early life in Satsuma. It goes on to cover her marriage to Tokugawa Iesada, and depicts the political situation in the Shogunate and the Meiji Restoration during her life.
Contains examples of:
- Gilligan Cut: Naogoro says he'd rather die than visit Zusho. The next scene shows him and Atsuhime in Zusho's house.
- Historical Domain Character: Almost every named character was a real person, most notably Atsuhime herself and Tokugawa Iesada.
- I Have Many Names: Most of the characters have multiple names. Truth in Television, given the time period. Atsuhime's birth name is Okatsu, she's later renamed Atsuko/Atsuhime, and even later she's renamed Tenshō-in.
- Sweet Polly Oliver: Atsuhime dresses as a man so she can attend her brother's lectures.
- Tomboy Princess: Atsuhime was one as a child. She grows out of it later.
- Yamato Nadeshiko: Atsuhime becomes one as she grows up.
