Amber Brown, who's eleven, is dealing with moving to another house, entering a new school and her parents' divorce. She'd prefer to have them back together, and isn't happy that her mom is now dating after divorcing her dad. However, Amber soon becomes fast friends with the girl next door, Brandi, who's at the same middle school, and her cheerful optimism keeps her going despite any issue that she faces.

Based on the book series by Paula Danziger and created and produced by Bonnie Hunt, the series premiered on Apple TV+ on July 29, 2022. The show was canceled in April 2023.

Tropes:

  • Affectionate Nickname: Amber's dad sometimes calls her "Ber" while speaking affectionately to her.
  • Age Lift: Amber is eleven rather than nine like in the books.
  • Alpha Bitch: Hannah is the most popular girl at Amber's school, surrounded with a constant Girl Posse and other adoring fans, but quite rude to girls like Amber.
  • Amicable Exes: Though there's some friction between them, Sarah and Phil are very friendly with each other after they divorced. Sarah even tells their daughter Amber that she loves Phil, just not in the same way as before.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: Amber clearly addresses the audience while making video diaries, though in universe it's to her viewers.
  • Character Title: It's named after the lead character.
  • Cool Aunt: Pam, Amber's maternal aunt, is more laid-back and indulgent compared with her mom. As a result, Amber adores her and sometimes tries to get Pam on her side in spats with her mom.
  • The Fashionista: Brandi is quite into wearing different stylish outfits and hairdos.
  • Genki Girl: Amber and Brandi are both usually very energetic, cheerful girls.
  • Girl Posse: Hannah, the school's Alpha Bitch, is always seen with four other girls doting on her. One even repeats back what she says to other girls.
  • Good Parents: Amber's mom and dad are both understanding, loving people who do all they can for her. The pair are divorced, but always try to put Amber's needs first.
  • Lighter and Softer: Amber's parents have a less bitter relationship than in the books. They also both are more attuned to her needs here.
  • Nice Girl: Amber and Brandi are both kind, sweet girls.
  • Quirky Curls: Amber has her loose afro, which fits well with her energetic, cheerful air.
  • Parent with New Paramour:
    • Amber's mom is dating again after her divorce from her dad, which Amber is not happy with (she wants them back together). She grows even more unhappy on learning they're engaged as well, but slowly accepts it.
    • Then she gets this again when her dad reconnects to a woman he knew years before. She tries to stop them dating through subtle means.
  • Race Lift: Amber, who's white in the books, became multiracial in the series. Her dad is now played by Michael Yo, who's biracial of Asian/black heritage, while her mom's white.
  • The Show of the Books: It's based on the series of popular children's books written by Paula Danziger.
  • Third-Person Person: Amber often refers to herself as "I, Amber Brown" while doing her video diaries.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: Brandi, a fashion-oriented girl with long hair who wears feminine clothing, vs Amber, who isn't into that, with a boyish style. At first Brandi assumes Amber will be putting on a new outfit for their first day of school like her. Amber though is happy with her afro and the same shirt and pants she has there. Downplayed as they're both just eleven however and it's not pronounced for either of them.
