One-off Ending Theme (new trope draft)
Ending Themes are common in Anime. These are usually the same for each episode, but sometimes it would clash with the tone of a particular episode. If an episode ends with an emotional death scene of a main character, it could be quite jarring to jump straight to scenes of them goofing off with the rest of the cast with upbeat music.
To prevent Mood Whiplash, some episodes may go with a Solemn Ending Theme for one episode. This song might start as background music and simply continue over the credits.
This type of ending isn't always done to prevent Mood Whiplash, and they may be goofier than the regular ending.
Examples:
- A Place Further than the Universe normally ends with the upbeat "Koko Kara, Koko Kara", but episode 12 continues "Mata Ne" from that episode's Downer Ending where Shirase's mother was revealed to be Dead All Along over a timelapse of Antarctica.
- Episode 27 of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders uses a song about Oingo & Boingo, the antagonists of that episode, instead of "Last Train Home", over animation with the same artstyle as Boingo's comic book that tells the future. Episodes 36 & 37, where Boingo teams up with Hol Horse, uses a similar ending.
- Episode 6 of Hitoribocchi no OO Seikatsu ends with a full version of Bocchi's "school of laughs anthem" she made up in that same episode instead of "Ne Issho Ni Kaero"
- Episode 51 of Hunter × Hunter continues "Riot" from the last scene of the episode over the regular ending animation.
