Sandbox / Twofer Token Minority Wick Check

Go To

Here a wick check will be performed on Twofer Token Minority.

Why?: As stated in Tropes Needing TRS: "Most commonly used as "character belongs to multiple minority groups" regardless of whether their identity is relevant in the story. Sometimes, the character won't even be the only member of either minority group, making the "token" part of the trope name meaningless. A TRS thread from 2018 closed without consensus."

Wicks checked: /50

Potholes will be bolded.

Explicitly mentions that the character belongs to a diverse cast (/50)
  1. TheWire.TropesSToZ: Korean-African-American Lesbian Detective Kima Greggs is at least a twofer, though her tokenhood is questionable given the show's diverse cast. Character in a diverse cast, not tokenism.

    RL Troping (/50)
  1. Characters.ProjectRunwaySeason15: He's half African-American and half Chinese, telling to the audience that people used to make fun of him as a child because of his Chinese name. In addition, he is one of the few straight male designers.

    Unclear, impossible to classify (/50)
  1. Magical Negro: See also Whoopi Epiphany Speech, Token Black Friend, and Mammy. For a similar trope about women, see Manic Pixie Dream Girl (as well as Disposable Woman and The Bechdel Test); the Magical Girlfriend may play a similar role for her love interest, but is not necessarily an example of this. For the gay version see Magical Queer (who may also be black). The disabled version of this is Inspirationally Disadvantaged. When a non-minority character is portrayed this way, the character is usually a Sidekick Ex Machina. Similar in vein to the Magical Native American, though that trope tends to be more explicitly magical. Also similar to Magical Asian, when an Asian character, often with supernatural abilities, fulfills a mentor role to a white character. Another related trope is White Man's Burden, where the plot is about an ordinary white person who befriends an underprivileged minority character. Related to Magical Romani, which is about Romani characters having magical abilities (or otherwise associated with the supernatural). Also compare Magical Jew.
  2. Headscratchers.PoliceQuest: In III, How did Morales manage to get a promotion to Homicide as your partner in the first place? Even if Internal Affairs didn't have enough evidence to bust her for criminal activity, her history of insubordination and belligerence should have still been enough to keep her in Traffic, if not had her relegated to a desk job or Reassigned to Antarctica. Maybe they couldn't prove the destruction of evidence, but those other infractions on her written record were very much verifiable. Especially because at least one of them you yourself corroborated and confirmed.
    • It's implied that the higher ups want someone to rein her in, and since Sonny is such a by-the-book cop, maybe the thought is that he'll rub off on her.
    • Politics. She's a Twofer Token Minority (female and Hispanic). The novelization had a few characters note that she got her position as a (in their words) "double-barreled affirmative action hire". Though Sonny did say that she "may still be worth saving".
  3. WarpThatAesop.Tropes: No Transhumanism Allowed: It is both bad and wrong to try to improve your station in life. Your destiny and psychology are determined by your race, and divinely ordained. Wanting to be something better, or even just other, than what you were born as is fundamentally immoral and anyone who is "uppity" enough to want to challenge this is an utterly reprehensible human being.
  4. Fanfic.ChristianHumberReloaded: The kids Vash plays with are a combination of extremely stereotypical behavior for their races and token disabilities.

    Unsorted
  1. Characters.Uncharted4AThiefsEnd: The only American to join the party in The Lost Legacy, next to Australian Chloe and South African Nadine, and the only man.
  2. Literature.TheBurningRoom: Lucia Soto's rapid promotion to detective is credited in part to her being a "twofer" because she's a woman and of Mexican ancestry. (Being in a highly publicized shootout where she took out some bad guys also helped.)
  3. Series.TokyoVice:
    • Being American and Jewish makes Jake one in the Japanese society, and he often faces discrimination in the professional settings where foreigners usually aren't welcome.
  4. YMMV.AndJustLikeThat: The Scrappy: Che Díaz has been widely derided by a large number of the series fanbase, partially for being the catalyst in breaking up Fan-Preferred Couple Miranda and Steve's marriage. (In fairness though, that wasn't really Che's fault as they were not fully aware of the details regarding the situation). However, even aside from this, many viewers find the character to be unlikable, obnoxious and entitled, at one point even seeming to believe that Miranda should be prioritising supporting their series pilot over comforting her son (who, by the way, is having suicidal thoughts) after his recent break-up. Not helping matters is the opinion that they have been included seemingly as a Twofer Token Minority in order to appeal to a wider demographic.
  5. Characters.You2018Season2: Gabe is both black and pansexual, Lucy is racially ambiguous, and she and Sunrise (a plus-sized woman) are in a serious relationship. Their roles are basically to give Love a friend group.
  6. TheOuterLimits1995.TropesQToZ:
    • In "Lithia" the only person of color in the episode (and her entire community) is Pelé, a black or mixed race woman who's also a lesbian.
  7. Series.DerryGirls: Derry Girls is a Channel 4 British-Irish comedy set in Derry/Londonderry in the 1990s, created and written by Lisa McGee. It features a group of teenage schoolgirls and James as they get into mischief. They are: Erin, an aspiring writer; her cousin Orla, a naive cloudcuckoolander; and best friend Clare, a nervy wannabe-activist; their friend Michelle, a loud-mouthed party girl; and Michelle's cousin James, a soft-spoken unfortunately English boy.
  8. Series.BeingHumanUS:
    • For most of the show run, Sally's the only person of color (Indian-American, it turns out) and a woman too. She's also Ambiguously Bi.
    • Emily is a Jewish lesbian.
    • Zoe's last name, Gonzales, indicates she's a Latina, and is at least bisexual, given she had dated Nick and then Lori. However, she's still figuring our her sexual orientation.
  9. Recap.KingOfTheHillS5E10YankeeHankee: Cotton describes a participant in his scheme to kill Castro as "Half-Mexican, half-Cuban. For this job, we'll be using the half that's Cuban."
  10. Equal-Opportunity Evil: Bleach: Aizen was willing to use anyone if it meant they could help him achieve his goals. He enlisted Shinigami such as the blind, black-skinned Tousen and Gin. He also enlisted Hollows (as Arrancars) the arch-enemies of Shinigami, such as the black-skinned, witch-doctor-themed Zommari, the female dark-skinned Harribel, the misogynistic Nnoitra, and the nihilistic Ulquiorra.
