Sandbox / Token Evil Female

Go To

Laconic: The one female member of the bad guys.

A subtrope of The Smurfette Principle.

Villains and villainous teams tend to be male. Maybe it's because Men Are Generic, Women Are Special, maybe it's because Most Writers Are Male, or maybe it's just because males are perceived as more dangerous. But since the good guys often have a few females among their ranks, the Designated Girl Fight rule must apply at one moment or another. This is usually what the Token Evil Female is here for.

The only evil female in a group of evil males, she's often a more or less evil version of The Chick, most times being the most passive member of the team, seldom taking direct action alone. She's usually related to one of the main villains either as a wife, daughter or sister. She's at risk of being a Flat Character, her defining characteristic being that she's an "evil woman" and not much else.

Absent from media aimed at a female audience, this character type is usually met in media aimed at young boys and young male teens.

She's probably the most likely to perform a Heel–Face Turn, especially if there's a handsome hero involved. She also might be the Token Good Teammate, but not always.
