The story starts with a local miner called Wu. He had two wives and had a daughter with each one. One of them dies, so her daughter has to move in with the other wife, referred to as a stepmother. But the stepmother is really envious and cruel. She forced the girl to live in the pigpens and painfully bound her feet. Which ended up so small that she called her Yeh Shen (meaning lotus foot). She grew up in this house, while having to take care of the worst chores at home, and cried a lot.

But one day, while doing laundry by the river, she met a giant golden fish. She befriended the fish and visited it every day. But her stepmother found out about it and decided to disguise herself to deceive the fish to gut it and cook it. And they ate it completely, only leaving the bones. Yeh Shen just took the bones to the river, where she started crying. There an old man told him that the bones are a final gift from the fish and that if she wishes anything to them, they will fulfill it.

One day a festival was fast approaching. There single girls would be looking for bachelors. Yeh Shen wanted to go to the festival, but her stepmother forbid her. She decided to go against her orders and wished upon the bones, which gave it a lot of nice clothes and makeover so she can go to the festival. She was the most beautiful girl there, which made both her stepmother and half-sister really jealous. But since she didn't want to be recognized by them, she decided to flee the place... But she forgot one of her shoes on the stairs.

A merchant found the shoe and sold it to another merchant, who in turn sold it to a king, who got obsessed with it and wanted to find its owner. His great plan was to... leave the shoe in the middle of the road and wait for all the girls who surely would want to try on it, while he and his entourage wait behind some bushes. The stepmother then sent her daughter over there to try on the shoe. When she noticed that it was too small, her mother just cut off her toes. But this didn't fool the king, who saw all the blood spilling. Meanwhile, Yeh Shen was in a bind, since the bones' magic had run out. She noticed the shoe and decided to conspicuously take it back home. But the king went ahead and chased her.

The moment she put the shoe on again, all the magical stuff appears once again. And the moment he sees how beautiful she is, decides to take her with him. He then sends the stepmother and her daughter to live in a cave, where they die by a rock slide... Abruptly ending the story, but Yeh Shen had a happy ending.

Tropes

  • Agony of the Feet: The half-sister cutting her toes to try to get the shoe to fit.
  • Beauty Equals Goodness: The song points several times that Yeh Shen is beautiful, and in turn points out how ugly her stepmother and half-sibling are. They compare the stepmother to Jabba de Hutt, and say that her daughter is more troll than girl.
  • Captain Obvious: One verse after the half-sister cuts her toes to get the shoe to fit, but she was spilling blood all over the place.
And even though it's hard to believe, this plan didn't work out.
  • Mood Whiplash: By the end of the song, the antagonists outcome is sung in a very somber and scary tone talking about how they died in a rock slide... And then immediately goes back to happily sing about the moral of the story.
  • Spoof Aesop: You shouldn't stalk Chinese girls from bushes, someone might report you. And run to the hospital if you cut off your toes.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: The story just says that Yeh Shen's mother died. But after that point, there is no mention about her dad or why he cannot help her.

31 Minutos

Señor Amable

"Señor Amable" ("Mister Kindness"), is the 7th episode of season 1 of 31 Minutos. Here Tulio points out that he is in the run for the "Mister Kindness Award" for being the nicest person around. So the whole episode we see Tulio faking being a nice person, with different levels of success.

  • Guinness Episode: Mario Hugo is reporting on the small town of Titirilquen wanting to break the record of most puppets spinning in a laundry machine. They manage to break it, and Mario Hugo is really happy for them... But he forgets to actually stop the laundry machine so the puppets just keep on spinning in the machine, as the whole town went in for the record.
  • Remember the New Guy?: This is Juanín's first episode in the series. But there is no introduction and everyone just acts as if he has always been an employee from the beginning.

Cirugía

"Cirugía" ("Surgery"), is the 2nd episode of season 4 of 31 Minutos. After Cossimo fires Balón von Bola for being too old, and threatening the same to everyone who is deemed "too old for TV", the staff try their best to hide their real ages, and they even resort to the help of an old acquaintance.

  • Meaningful Rename: Tío Pelado (Uncle Baldy) decides to turn a new leaf and start a legitimate business as a surgeon. And having operated on himself and gotten new hair, he now calls himself Tío Peludo (Uncle Hairy).
  • Magic Plastic Surgery: "Tío Peludo" surgeries are done in real quickly and characters recover on the same day. The moment he takes the bandages, Tulio looks completely different, and the rest of the cast were outside the oeprating room the same day.
  • Aging Would-Be Hipster: By necessity, after Cossimo said he would fire anyone deemed too old, Tulio comes back from the commercial break wearing a cap and hoodie, while carrying a radio on his shoulder and trying to add more slang.
  • Blatant Lies: Tulio wears some glasses to be able to see something better, but when Cossimo asks why he was wearing them (since he was threatening to fire anyone suspected of being old) Tulio said they were modern sunglasses, and looks directly at the sun to prove it... And gets his eyes on fire.
  • Plot Twist: At the end of the episode it is revealed that Cossimo is as old as Balón himself, proved by a photo of them in elementary school.
  • Back-Alley Doctor: Tío Peludo might or might not actually gotten a license, but his clinic gives the regular vibe. Dark, unsanitary, operating with a chainsaw, and his special anethesia (a log to the head).
  • Status Quo Is God: None of the characters learns their lesson and just keep on being vain about their surgeries, but turns out that they were low-quality and just reverse themselves, making them all look the same as in the beginning.

XXXIV festival de la canción de Titirilquén

"XXXIV festival de la canción de Titirilquén" ("Titirilquén XXXIV Song Festival"), is the 15th episode of season 3 of 31 Minutos and the third song compilation episode. The male cast decides to participate in the festival as their old group... despite not being able to recreate the voices that made them famous, and in front of a very picky audience.

  • Diegetic Musical: All the songs are supposed to be live performances during the festival.
  • Shout-Out: Patana explains that the audience for Titirilquén's Song Festival is so demanding and rowdy that the media has nicknamed them "The Beast". A reference to Viña del Mar's audience, who are nicknamed "The Monster" for how they tend to act towards acts they don't like.
  • Literal Metaphor: Patana states that the contestants must be enduring hell backstage, meaning they must be really stressed out. She wasn't aware that Bodoque had just summoned the devil to the room at that moment.
  • Produce Pelting: During the whole show, the audience keeps throwing produce to whoever is on stage at any given time. And they even do it backstage to the artists' door.
  • Shaped Like Itself: The festival's host says that Titirilquén's Song Festival is the most important Song Festival in Titirilquén.

  • Diegetic Musical:
  • Riches to Rags: The episode shows Mr. Manguera living at the dumpster after having to sell the network and losing all his fortune.
  • Broke Episode: The second half of the episode has the cast having to make the cheapest possible news show from a landfill and already having to live in rags.
  • Terrible Artist: After being hyped us as the fastest artist of all, we finally see Denis Danis painting and he is indeed incredibly fast... But all his portraits look horrible, with the whole cast regretting having saved money to hire him.
  • Bait-and-Switch: When trying to find out who Patana is in love with, she starts saying the letters of his name, basically spelling Mario Hugo. But just as he is about to declare his love for her, Guaripolo appears, revelaing himself to be the lover.
  • Act of True Love: Played for laughs. After some failed attemps, Tulio manages to prove that he loves Cindy by showing that he knows her cellphone number by heart.
  • Whole-Plot Reference: The episode is a watered-down version of Grease, with Tulio wanting to hide the fact he had a fulfilling relationship during his vacation time.
  • Telethon: The cast decides to create an event for people to donate so Mr. Manguera can become a millionaire again, so he can buy the network back and rehire them all.
  • Visual Pun: When Mico asks people what they have stolen, Uncle Pelado shows up saying he stole a crocodile boots and wallet. Turns out they are a crocodile's boots and wallet, as said crocodile came chasing for them.
  • Bait-and-Switch: At the end Mr. Manguera strikes oil while digging a pool and becomes rich again. And at the end we see that he has rehired all the cast back... To take care of his gas station business.
  • Dark Secret: The whole episode is about the revelation of some horrible secret Policarpo has. Which turns out to be that he is bald.
  • Boring Vacation Slideshow: Tulio asks Juanín to talk about his vacations to fill time. Juanín took a slideshow recounting how he just stayed in the building, and he basically just kept doing the maintenance of the place.
  • Indubitably Uninteresting Individual: The way Policarpo is presented. Another channel aparently made a biography about him and they could only say that he was a really normal person with normal hobbies. And the most they could say about Policarpo, is that he is the most Policarpo person on the planet.
  • Edutainment Show: In-universe, the cast tries really hard to make the whole show really educational to impress Cindy.
  • Right for the Wrong Reasons: Tulio is completely right to be suspicious and show disdain to Uncle Horacio, as the more we see about his attitude and his past show him as a really despicable person. But Tulio's reasons to hate him are personal.
  • The Reveal: Turns out that the reason that Tulio hates Uncle Horacio so much is becuase he assisted his show when he was little, and Uncle Horacio humiliated him by mocking his haircut and throwing a pie to his face.
  • Show Within a Show: Uncle Horacio's show was a kids' show that supposedly ran decades ago, and is beloved by a lot of people to this day.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: Lulo Serrucho disguises are just covering his handle with some fabric ressembling his mark. But it is still obvious that he is a hand saw. Still fools everyone he encounters.
  • "Flowers for Algernon" Syndrome: The cast manages to help Dante to finally get rid of his explosion addiction. But since a huge meteor was heading to earth, they work even harder to get him back into his explosive persona so he could get rid of it before it destroys earth.
  • Pseudolympics: Due to everyone loving the idea of being dirty, they started the "Piggish sports championship". Which includes toilet diving and dandruff skiing, among others.
  • Visual Pun: One imitator arrives saying that he was Bodoque's double, meaning as a stunt double. Then he faces the camera and turns out he is literaly double Bodoque, as if two Bodoques had been fused in the middle.
  • Call-Forward:
    • When Bodoque recounts his first report, he states he met a guy named Freddy Turbina, who was trying to get inspiration for a song. As we know, he was one of the artists during the Ranking Top in the first season.
    • When bodoque recounts his first report, he says he met Sasquatch, a huge black monster wandering the woods. And he mentioned his dream was traveling to Japan, because every monster wants to destroy Tokyo at least once, in reference to "Japonés", when we indeed see him destroying the city.
  • Putting the Band Back Together: The second half of the episode starts with Tulio and Juanín calling all the former cast so they can gather and think of a solution to go back to TV.
  • Shoddy Shindig: Juanín's party at the beginning. Hours pass without anyone showing up. And when the first guest arrives, Jackson Aceituno, Juanín just couldn't keep a conversation. The party is a bore until Policarpo arrivs.
  • Bait-and-Switch Suicide: When Patana reveals she is in love with Guaripolo, Mario Hugo decides that there is nothing else for him and prepares a noose. Tulio runs to try to stop him, but turns out he was just sitting in the noose, saying he will just continue swinging until he dies of boredom.
  • Behind the Black: Mario Hugo is reporting live about a robbery by a dangerous armed man. When Tulio asks where exactly the robbery is happening, Mario Hugo points out it is on their studio itself, and then the camera pans out to show that the robber and Mario Hugo were just besides Tulio's desk.
  • I Can Change My Beloved: When Mario Hugo prooves to Patana that Guaripolo is a terrible person, she states that this just makes her love him even more, since she knows she can change him.
  • Shout-Out: When the rest wantw to find out who Patana was in love with, they disguises Mario Hugo as a woman and say she is Patana's old school friend, Tootsie.
  • Exact Words: During the lint invasion, Guaripolo says he is going to take care of them. One segment later, and there is more lint than before so the cast questions why Guaripolo hasn't taken care of them. He says he did. He has been taking good care of them by feeding them and getting them vaccinated.
  • If It Bleeds, It Leads: When Juanín mentions there hasn't been any terrible events, Tulio gets really angry, outright saying that, as a news show, they live off public misery. And when an earthquake hits, Tulio was ecstatic that real news have happened.
  • Oh, Crap!: The robber threatens to shoot everyone in the "studio" if they don't give him everything they have, but Tulio states they have nothing. Out of nowhere Bodoque appears with a plank full of nails pointing out that the robber at least has a gun, and Mario Hugo mentions he also has a nice jacket. The robber immediately understands the situation and flees.
  • Shout-Out: The result of the Mona Lisa's bad retoration and the guy who bought it in the end is a reference to a bad restoration of a Jesus freso in Spain that became memetic in 2012.
  • Shout-Out: Mario Hugo's report is about some weird creatures living in a garden (lawn gnomes) that the show calls the Fitupos (The Sfurms).
  • Bread, Eggs, Breaded Eggs: Tulio admits that the show is full of flaws, defects, and defective flaws.
  • Literal-Minded: After the meteorite lands, Bodoque immediately starts making plans, saying it is a gold mine. Just a moment later, Tulio already has a pickaxe ready to get to all the "gold inside".
  • Tempting Fate: When Tulio accepts to allow the baby to stay at the show, he mentions how little he is, and asks how much of a problem he could be. Which of course, turns out to be, a lot.
  • Unintentional Period Piece: In-Universe. The show takes place in 2014 and Uncle Horacio says that no one notices his show is just reruns since the episodes themes are timeless. Then on TV we see one of the reruns with him praising "the computer", stating that soon there will be one in every country. Another character explaining the computer can add and substract; and in the future maybe even mutiply. And then saying that man might get to the moon in the year 1996.
  • Instantly Proven Wrong: Uncle Horacio says that no one notices he only airs reruns becuase his show is so classic yet current. Then we immediately see one of his episodes airing treating comptuers as some newfangled technology and pointing out that man hasn't arrived to the moon.
  • The Dreaded: Jack Patata is stated to be the most dangerous criminal of all. All the characters are terrified to just be near him, and people get blind simply by reading his criminal record.
  • Here We Go Again!: After Cindy decides to give Tulio another chance to amend his mistake of ditching her, they set a new date. But once again, Tulio decides to go to an interview and forgets about his date, so Cindy, once again, bows to get revenge.
  • Make an Example of Them: The main plot starts when they report on how the police are about to execute Jack Patata (by throwing him in a pit of crocodiles), to send a message to other criminals to stop.
  • Impossible Theft: Tulio talks about the crime wave and then goes to a report. Once we get back to the studio, he starts talking normally, not noticing that he is naked since his suit was stolen during that pause.
  • Easy Amnesia: The snake expert loses his memory after hitting his head. So Guaripolo and Bodoque keep bumping him in the head, switching between remembering and not remembering. Then he apparently gets so many bumps that he just couldn't remember at all. Then Guaripolo decides to give him a "No bump". He releases an anvil that falls just besides the expert, not hitting him. And this, somehow, makes his memory come back.
  • Magic Antidote: Bodoque was really weakened and about to die due to the poison, but the moment he finishes the jar of antidote, he was completely back to normal.
  • "Rashomon"-Style: Subverted. During a debate between the Hatfields and McCoys to see why they were fighting, the McCoys say that Jebedías Hatfield stole their grandma's chamber pot to use it as a hat. Then the McCoys tell their version... Saying that Jebedías saw grandma's chamber pot and took it because he wanted a hat. When Tulio points out that both versions are the same, the Hatfields admit their mistake, and the McCoys forgive them, so their 50-year feud ends.
  • Giant Novelty Check: Mr. Manguera decides to sell the network (again), and the full amount was paid with a giant check.
  • Undisclosed Funds: The giant check from Mr. Cowboy only states the amount as "my whole fortune."
  • Trigger-Happy: Mr. Cowboy, whenever he is really happy, he starts firing his pistols in the air. As well as the Hatfields and McCoys. When Tulio asks how they will celebreate stopping 50 years of shooting, they proclaim they celebrate... By shooting!
  • Feuding Families: They bring the classic Hatfield and McCoy fight, that is stated that has been going on for 50 years.
  • Show Within a Show: "The Space Zombie" is a movie in the show's universe. It is aparently really old and condidered a classic.
  • Humans Are the Real Monsters: This is apparently the message of the movie "The Space Zombie." The ending shows the zombie death and some characters saying he only wanted to have friends. And that they were the real zombies.
  • Showdown at High Noon: Parodied, as expected. Mr. Manguera and Mr. Cowboy decide to have a duel and shoot each other in turns. None of them manages to hit their target, just hitting employees on the other side of the room.
  • Vegetarian Vampire: Juanín explains that Bombi actually doesn't like to eat people and took away his teeth, so even if he tries, he wouldn't be able to hurt anyone.
  • Plague Zombie: It is stated that anyone bitten by a zombie will turn into one as well.
  • Plot Twist: Turns out that lieutenant Puñete was so focused on finding the last remaining zombie becuase he would be his long lost brother.
  • The Butler Did It: Parodied. The lieutenant said that one of the employees of 31 Minutos was a murderer. He was listing each one of the regular cast and finally states the culprit was... Jenkins, the butler. A character that has never appeared before.
  • Remember the New Guy?: Played for laughs. The murderer was Jenkins, the butler, a completely new character, but everyone talks about how much seniority he has and how respected he is in the channel. Lampshaded when he says he did it since he got angry that everyone acts as if he doesn't exist.
  • Strange Minds Think Alike: When everyone was feeling paranoid about Bombi lacking a heartbeat, Tulio determines that he must be... a Yugoslav, completely ignoring the obvious conclusion of him being a zombie. Later when we see an interview with lieutenant Puñete, he states that there is a zombie invasion and advises people to look out for zombie signals, as some people might get them mixed up with Yugoslavs.
  • Worst News Judgement Ever: When Juanín explains their guest is a famous watermelon because it's trendy, Tulio states then it is their duty to interview the watermelon and ignore any real news.
  • Pseudolympics: Tenison reports about the "Senior Olympics". Which involves several activities like cane fencing and denture racing.
  • The Big Race: La Copletada con Cicletada. Which is a bike race... that also involves preparing and eating hotdogs while racing.
  • Ironic Echo: Juanín asks if Tulio could stop laughing at him for having his own webshow, Tulio says he could, he just doens't want to. Once Juanín became incredibly popular in his show (due to mocking Tulio), Tulio asks if he could stop mocking him, and Juanín sayshe could, but doesn't want to.
  • Flash In The Pan Fad: Juanín's webshow just has three viewers at the beginning (some senior citizens that don't know how to change the page). Then, once he starts mocking Tulio, he is the most popular star in all of the internet, to the point of being given the anchorman position in the show, but he can't go for two reports before his fame dwindles and is considered old news.
  • Swapped Roles: The second act consists of Mr. Manguera promoting Juanín to host of 31 Minutos due to his popularity, and demoting Tulio to Juaníns role as producer.
  • Maximum Capacity Overload: At the beginning, we see everyone trying to get into the elevator to go to the gala. Juanín tries to warn them that the maximum capacity isnine, but everytime he tries to count, somoene yells a different number. Of course, the elevator breaks and they have to see how to get out.
  • Elevator Failure: The elevator breaks down and dozens of characters are trapped. Then the air conditioning breaks, and the lights go out. Subverted in that it is shown that the elevator could have actually worked properly from the beginning, but the the operator (Guaripolo) was not aware of any of its emergency features.
  • Potty Emergency: Eventually all the characters are suffering because they need to go to the bathroom. They were lucky that Someone had a bathroom available inside.
  • Running Gag: Percy asking everyone if they are or have seen his godfather.
  • Here We Go Again!: At the end, everyone is able to get out, so only Guaripolo stays behind since he is the elevator operator. He then has to take Coke to the first floor, but the elevator gets stuck once again, and Guaripolo has to listen to his horrible joke.
  • Produces Pelting: At the end, Coke Mauricio's joke gets so long and tedious that the audience starts to throw food at him. And someone even throws an anvil.
  • Cannot Tell a Joke: Coke Mauricio, the "long joke teller." It's implied his jokes are so long they simply are not funny. He actually manages to fill almost the whole gala timeframe with a single joke. And the reason he doesn't fill it completely is because the audience getws annoyed and starts pelting him.

Canciones

  • Quarreling Song: The song is about the brothers arguing on who has the better word of the two.
  • Mundane Made Awesome: It is a song about how the best thing in the whole world is being able to take the training wheels out of your bike.

  • This Is a Song: Turns out this is the meaning behind the lyrics. The song talks about how it is a song in Spanish, but sung backwards.
  • As Long as It Sounds Foreign: The video seems to take place in Egypt, with the whole desert and mummies theme, but the lyrics are just some vaguely Arabic sounding words which at the end is revealed to actually be Spanish backwards.
  • Annoyingly Repetitive Child: The Tapia siblings keep asking for a bunch of ridiculous things from their father.
  • Pun-Based Title: The song at first glance seems to mean "Dad, I love you." But it quikcly becomes obvious that it means "Dad, I want to ask you for..."
  • Ding-Dong-Ditch Distraction: The main theme of the song is how Juan takes this "hobby" really seriously and how good he is at it.
  • "I Am Great!" Song: He sings about how he is the best at ding-dong ditch. And how he considers himself a professional.

  • Grief Song: The song is about how Roberto is sad about having lost his WHOLE taxonomical order. Singing about how he somehow survived the ice age that killed the rest of the dinosaurs, and now he is all alone.
  • Artistic License – Paleontology: Some of the details about Roberto's past are not very scientific. Like how he is apparently millions of years old, or when he mentions that caveman used to hunt dinosaurs.

  • All Just a Dream: The video ends with Milton's mother waking him up from the nightmare he is having.
  • Secret Test of Character: At the end it is relvealed that Los Bulliciosos keep changing activities, not to keep Navarrete from playing with them, but to confirm if he would be willing to always follow along, as they just always love to try new things at a moment's notice.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Milton is really happy to have a theme park just for himself and hear how jealous the other kids wereareUntil he starts getting bored of how repetitive everything becomes and decides to invite the other kids, only to be told that it goes against the contract.
  • Deal with the Devil: Milton isn't aware that the man that gave him the theme park was the devil himself. And as per their contract, now he is forced to stay at the park forever.
  • Lyrical Dissonance: The song has a very upbeat melody and talks about how you should always laugh. Then you hear a little more and it specifically talks how adversity is too much and you will never get better in life, so you might as well laugh as that's all you can do.
  • Picky Eater: Carmencita's song is all about she rejecting every single dish put in front of her.
  • Magically-Binding Contract: It is implied that Milton is literally incapable to leave the park due to the contract he singed with the devil.
  • "I Am Great!" Song: The song is an hymn to how much the brothers admire Guantecillo and all the nice things they want to do for him.
  • Gratuitous English: The chorus is "(We) want to see you", which sounds similar to Guantecillo. The song itself lets you know beforehand to pay attention to this.
"Listen to the chorus, (it's in English)."

  • Disappeared Dad: Parodied. He sings about how he has never met his godfather and wonders what he is doing and how he might look.
  • Shout-Out: When Percy wonders if his godfather might be either fat or thin, the godfather wears masks of both Laurel and Hardy. And then he wonders if he might ressemble Marlon Brando or Al Pacino.
  • Shipper on Deck: The whole school towards Norberto and Raquel. The lyrics say that everyone say that they are a couple, and that they must kiss, love, and marry each other.
  • Homemade Sweater from Hell: The song is all about the siblings having to endure all the badly-made clothes their mother makes for them.
  • Protest Song: Played for laughs. The song is an angry letter about how boring and annoying road trips are for him.
