Roleplay / The Last Trumpet

Go To

The Last Trumpet is an Alternate History Roleplay centered on an America that has collapsed into civil war following years of political instability and a dangerous power vacuum created after the 2012 election.

The Last Trumpet is run on a Discord server. Some information is available on the subreddit.

The Last Trumpet contains examples of:

  • Anarchy Is Chaos: Averted. Revolutionary Appalachia, the Green Mountain Collective, and the Cascadian Free Territory are very well organized, with the latter two being de facto nation states.
  • Arch-Enemy:
    • The Christie Administration and SCOTUS. Both claim to be the legitimate government of the United States and naturally see defeating the other as their top priority.
    • Cascadia and the Northwest Territorial Imperative are as ideologically opposed as it is possible to be.
  • Balkanize Me: The eventual fate of the United States.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: A few factions are rather... bizarre, but have proven their capabilities:
    • The Kingdom of Coldwood is a constitutional monarchy set up by the Society for Creative Anachronism in northern New York (although they do use modern weapons).
    • The Federation is a small faction created by a bunch of Star Trek fans attending a convention in Riverside, Iowanote . They've won local support largely because, as their society is modeled on the Federation, they are big fans of human rights and democracy.
  • Butterfly of Doom: The point of divergence is the Clinton Administration killing Osama bin Laden in 1998. This prevents 9/11, the war in Afghanistan, and especially the rally-around-the-flag effect that followed 9/11. Instead, many of the political divisions of the 1990s, especially the militia movement, persist into the 2000s.
  • Chummy Commies: Arkansas, the ASWR, Cascadia, the Green Mountain Collective, and Revolutionary Appalachia are all some degree of this.
  • Divided States of America
  • Enemy Mine:
    • Cascadia, Deseret, and the Malmstrom Clique form an alliance against the Northwest Territorial Imperative.
    • The Delta Free State, fearing the advance of the Confederacy and Greater Louisiana, places itself under the protection of the People's Republic of Arkansas.
    • New Afrika allies with Revolutionary Appalachia against the South Piedmont Republic.
  • Historical Villain Upgrade:
    • Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio becomes a brutal dictator, using dissenters for forced labor and even engaging in human trafficking.
    • Televangelist Kenneth Copeland leads the Congregation of the Final Sacrament, an extreme fundamentalist Christian state.
  • Knight Templar: Chief Justice James E. Baker. Initially, he had noble intentions to preserve order by having the Supreme Court temporarily assume executive power. As the US collapsed into chaos, he quickly fell into the role of a tyrant, seeking to restore order by brutal means, up to and including assassinating Defense Secretary John Kerry and executing the rest of Howard Dean's cabinet after Dean's failed coup.
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: Averted hard. Almost every notable figure is a real person.
  • One Nation Under Copyright:
    • The Directorate, which controls San Francisco, is under the tight control of an alliance of Silicon Valley tech companies, including Facebook and Apple.
    • The Lone Star Free State is dominated by Texan oil companies.
  • Police State:
    • The New York City Peacekeeping Authority takes this rather literally, with the government being effectively run by the New York Police Department.
    • The Maricopa Republic is an even darker version of this, effectively an alliance between local police in southern Arizona and Immigrations and Customs Enforcement.
  • Politically Incorrect Villain: So, so many.
    • The Alpha Kingdom runs on misogyny, with its stated ethos being the restoration of the patriarchy.
    • The Northwest Territorial Initiative, the South Piedmont Republic, Greater Louisiana, and the Second Confederacy are all led by various flavors of white supremacists.
    • The Congregation of the Final Redemption is an extremist Christian theocracy.
    • The Maricopa Republic practices slavery in all but name, specifically directed against the Hispanic population.
  • The Remnant:
    • The North Carolina Provisional Government is the remnant of the state of North Carolina, but only controls the major cities.
    • Both the Christie Administration and SCOTUS characterize themselves as the remnant of the United States.
    • The Commonwealth of Virginia is a more cohesive version of this for Virginia. A similar situation exists with the Commonwealth of Kentucky, the State of West Virginia, and the Iowa Provisional Government.
    • The Republic of Florida is secretly this for the CIA.
  • Right-Wing Militia Fanatic:
    • The Northwest Territorial Imperative is an openly white supremacist state in Idaho, with many of its prominent figures being outright neo-Nazis.
    • The Greater North Louisiana State is only slightly less racist, being more influenced by the KKK. They simply want to suppress or expel minorities, while the NTI is aiming for outright extermination.
  • Ruthless Modern Pirates: The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Pirate Republic of Nantucket.
  • The Theocracy:
    • New Bethlehem is an evangelical state based in the South, organized through megachurches.
    • Deseret combines aspects of American democracy with Mormon theocracy.
    • The Congregation of the Final Redemption is a radical Christian theocracy, often described as "Christian ISIS".
    • The Church of Scientology is, unsurprisingly, a Scientologist theocracy, but without real roots in the population.
  • The Warlord: Several factionsnote  have their origins in the US military, being led by military officers and often flying flags inspired by their respective units. Some are more benevolent than others.
    • The Boston Clique, the Colorado Security Initiative, and the Maricopa Republic are police warlords, having their origins in police coups against local governments.
