Roleplay / Kami&Rice

Kami&Rice is a chat-based roleplay currently focusing on Alex, an ordinary high-school student who gets involved with some dark powers he does not know much about. It all started with a school shoot-out in which Andrei shot and killed multiple students, then he was apprehended by the police. He then escapes from the police multiple times and shows up at the funerals, causing unrest between his colleagues.

Another curveball is thrown when Robert, who was Andrei's first victim, popped up one week after the event with no recollection of what happened during that week. Soon afterwards Andrei came and killed him again while displaying superhuman feats of strength and agility.

This work provides examples of:

  • Antihero: Florin wants Andrei's murders to stop, but from the very start he wanted to kill him. His morals are quite lacking, he himself said that he doesn't mind going to prison because he will want to kill someone sooner or later, while also stating that he has nothing to lose.
  • Anywhere but Their Lips: Alex and Sabina kiss each other on their necks, once she starts to get some courage. The trope sees more use as they bond.
  • Betty and Veronica: Zig-zagged. Sabina can be seen as the sweet and caring one, compared to the lustful and adulterous Ramona. From another point of view the roles are reversed, Alex considers Ramona to be quite shallow and a bit dull, while the idea of comforting the broken, innocent girl whose father died quite tragically is seen as being a better choice.
  • Blonde, Brunette, Redhead: Laura has light, blonde hair, Sabina foils her with a darker brunette and Maria has nice, ginger hair. They're all buddies and probably talk about boys and nail polish all day but how should Alex know?
  • Crush Blush: Sabina blushes quite a lot, like whenever Alex compliments her.
  • Cry into Chest: Sabina and Alex, in one of their more emotional moments.
  • Death Glare: Alex, on multiple occasions, though quite downplayed, it didn't reach its full potential.
  • Devil in Plain Sight: Justified in Andrei's case. He has commited many atrocities, some even in public, but currently no one seems to care really much about them, or connect them to Andrei. This is mostly because of his mind control and manipulation powers, seeing as no one really bats an eye at mass homicides or suicides that always seem to pop up.
  • Ditzy Genius: Malin lacks quite a bit of common sense and social skills, he is easily terrified by things such as girls hitting on him and occasionally can't subtract the true meaning out of a conversation.
  • Dramatic Sitdown: Sabina sits down on a bed when she finds out that Andrei died. She has a soft spot for bad stuff happening, ever since her father killed himself to let his brother live.
  • Eldritch Location: And how! The neighbourhood in which Robert's picture was taken is all but indescribable. A whole city block is in ruins, some buildings are collapsed, others are merely in ruin, while some are cleanly sliced in half. And that's just the beginning. Closer examination reveals various body parts sticking out of the rubble, and deeper in there are lamp-posts tightened around corpses like vines. To top it all, Sakura trees are growing everywhere: on the streets, through the ruins, on the rooftops of buildings. Makes one wonder just how powerful Andrei is.
  • Equivalent Exchange: The deal Dani offered Sabina, in which he will revive her dad in exchange for a soul. Anna's deal is similar, for her to live free of her illness, Andrei must die. Dani implies that all these kind of deals have high costs.
  • Foil: Florin's traits contrast Alex's on multiple occasions: his very introduction into the story stated that he wanted to kill Andrei, while Alex has been reluctant from the very start. He has quite a "cool dude" attitude compared to the more conventional Alex. He also drinks and bitches about not having a girlfriend, often simultaneously, things that Alex does not indulge into. He has even made a conscious effort to keep Alex on the good side by downright telling him that he will not het him kill anyone, and even going off at the hotel to possibly confront Andrei on his own. The trope was a bit downplayed though, as Florin more or less directly inspired Alex to carry a knife at all times.
  • Freudian Trio: Vlad/Marius/Dani, with Vlad taking the role of Id, Dani being the Superego and Marius the Ego.
  • Handsplay in Theater: Version A, Sabina and Alex held hands during the romantic movie of their first date. Although they weren't in a relationship at the time, there were quite clearly feelings in both of them.
  • Heroic BSoD: Florin simply gives up after killing Andrei, he just sits there, next to his body, for hours, waiting for the police to come and take him in.
  • Holding Hands: Most often Alex and Sabina, mostly in romantic contexts, or when either of them needs the comfort. Alex also has the tendency to hold Sabina's hand when she might be in peril.
  • If You Kill Him, You Will Be Just Like Him!: Invoked quite blatantly by Alex, when he tells Sabina not to let him cross the Moral Event Horizon, if he is ever tempted to resort to not-so-nice means to stop a villain from causing more harm.
  • I Gave My Word: Alex's promise to Sabina that he would not die, and also, later on, that he will not let her forget him.
  • Interrupted Intimacy: A particular cringe-worthy example happens when Marta walks in on Alex on the bed, on top of her daughter, without his shirt.
  • Love Makes You Crazy: Anna seems to be a victim of this, she is very dedicated to Andrei, despite the horrible murders and atrocities he's commited, she may even be willing to die for him.
  • Love Triangle: Ramona is dissattisfied with her relation with Dani, because he is unwilling to go quite as far intimately, thus she uses Tudor as an outlet for those desires. Tudor is well aware of Dani's existence, though he is too unscrupulous to care too much, while Dani has always been suspecting such affairs.
  • Lust Object: Tudor is this to Ramona, because of her frustrations about her relationship with Dani she is just using him, though he doesn't seem to mind.
  • Make-Out Kids: Ramona and Dani, or Ramona and whoever else she gets her hands on.
  • Police Are Useless: Despite the fact that all of Andrei's homicides were reported to the police, almost nothing has been done about it. Andrei has been detained multiple times, but he escaped quite effortlessly.
  • Refuge in Audacity: Andrei's and Alex's phone conversations almost always fall into this. Florin is quite horrified by the connotations.
  • Relationship Compression: A necessary evil, given the format that is used. Most prominently with Sabina.
  • Romantic Spoonfeeding: This happens every time a new Ferdinand gets baked.
  • Rule of Symbolism: The Sakura trees, growing oh so lovely between the ruins and corpses in Andrei's neighbourhood. They also are a symbol of death in japanese mythology.
  • Sacrificial Lamb: Robert is shot dead right at the start of the story. He gets better.
  • Serenade Your Lover: Discussed by Ramona, at the festival. Also played straight later on, at Sabina's home.
  • Shrinking Violet: Sabina is a minor example of this trope. She is somewhat emotionally distant from her friends, but she really opens up to Alex once he earns her trust.
  • Ship Tease: RalucaxDani, as Alex likes to point out at every possible time. Though it's complicated, Dani already has a girlfriend and Raluca wouldn't really want to ruin anything.
  • Thousand-Yard Stare: Sabina sprouts one on multiple occasions, such as when Dani suggests that her father committed suicide as a conscious act, not because of a soul deal.
  • Trying Not to Cry: Done by Sabina on occasion.
  • Unexplained Recovery: Robert pops up, scarred yet alive, in his room a week after he was shot through the heart. Alex tries to find out how he got better, but hasn't had much luck so far.
