“Talent is hope, talent is despair… what do you think? Why can’t it be both?”

Hope's Road to Despair is a roleplay hosted on Discord and logged on DeviantArt, designed by Zeirt.

The plot follows the Danganronpa franchise, thirty years after the ending of Danganronpa 3, in a world that managed to heal from the Tragedy and Ultimate students were recruited once more to study in a school named Future's Road Academy. However, this time it was out of fear of another Tragedy happening...

As you may imagine, after these thirty years, a killing game takes place again! The newly-arrived students find themselves trapped in the school, where Monousagi, a rabbit suspiciously similar to Monokuma, informs the students they'll have to kill each other if they want to leave the school.

The students need to find who's really behind the bunny in order to break free from the game, after it becomes clear to them they died before, their memories are messy, and, to make things worse, there seems to be no escape from the game as it repeats over and over.

As this roleplay has ended, all spoilers will be unmarked. Beware.

Hope's Road to Despair provides examples of:

  • Alas, Poor Villain: A lot of the students had selfless reasons to kill, trying to protect someone else or even having murdered by accident. It also applies to the Mastermind himself.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: This is Danganronpa, after all. Cruel executions are a must.
  • Teenagers Forced to Kill: If they want to leave, they will have to kill someone and not get caught. Or they can also find the Mastermind.
  • Schrödinger's Gun: While the story had a defined start and ending, much of what happened in the middle was moved around according to the member's actions and discoveries.
  • Thanatos Gambit: Celeste's death triggered the sequence of events that ultimately ended the game, and it was exactly what she planned.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Future Foundation's measures to keep Ultimates in line. It eventually backfired on them.
