Class Trial 71

Monokuma divides the students of Hope's Peak Academy into 3 teams, placing Makoto Naegi, Hajime Hinata, and Shuichi Saihara in charge of each team and forcing them to compete in various games with their lives and the lives of their classmates on the line. When a new rule allows them to end the competition in favour of a killing game if all three should die, the three protagonists plot a suicide only to wind up murdered instead.

Tropes for the Seventy-First Class Trial
  • Accidental Murder: Shuichi's head injury resulted from an unexpected tussle between Kokichi and the conscious Hajime knocking a heavy trophy onto him as he lay unconscious. With the new rules saying that teams without a leader will die at the end of the competition, Kokichi is then forced to kill the other two protagonists to return to a normal killing game. Somewhat subverted as Monokuma admits that Shuichi's actual cause of death was the poison that Kokichi fed him as a cover-up and not the head injury.
  • Driven to Suicide: Makoto, Hajime, and Shuichi decide to die to end Monokuma's competitions in a way where the two losing protagonists' classmates wouldn't have to die as well.
  • Gambit Roulette: Kokichi concocts quite the roundabout scheme to try and prevent the trio's suicide,
  • Heroic Sacrifice: In order to give herself an alibi when the suspects are narrowed down to her and Kokichi, Kaede performs one in the end by admitting that Monokuma chose for her to be a fourth team leader who'd be allowed to escape if she could keep that title secret, agreeing to be executed with the culprit for losing.
  • Heroic Suicide: The three Protagonists attempt one that Kokichi foiled.
  • The Millstone: Miu acts as one, both creating the weapon that Kokichi ends up using to incapacitate Hajime and a device which messes with Monokuma's technology just enough to distort all of their electronic evidence such as the Monokuma Files.
  • New Rules as the Plot Demands: Monokuma decides to forgo the traditional killing game in favour of a series of competitions between the three classes where the protagonists of the losing teams will be executed. As the competition goes on, he adds more and more new rules, promising to execute the classmates of the two losing protagonists, offering to go back to a regular killing game if all three protagonists die, and even placing Kaede on a secret fourth team where she could escape if she kept her new role secret or be executed if she couldn't.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Kokichi's plan to prevent the trio from committing suicide goes horribly wrong when Shuichi is struck by a falling trophy and he finds himself having to kill all three instead.

Class Trial 72

After trapping his students in the Funhouse, Monokuma, or rather Killy Wonka, introduces a variety of unique candy treats to act as their sole source of food. Gonta Gokuhara is soon found gruesomely murdered in the elevator, the upper half of his body having gone mysteriously missing.

Class Trial 73

Forced to participate in a game of The Bachelor with Makoto Naegi with their lives on the line, the ladies of Danganronpa find themselves in a class trial when Makoto is killed.

Tropes for the Seventy-Third Class Trial
  • And the Adventure Continues: Although Himiko is executed as the Culprit and Monokuma is betrayed by his children, the survivors merely find themselves back in a new Season of The Bachelor, with Kazuichi replacing Makoto as their would-be suitor.
  • Betrayal by Offspring: Monokuma ends up being the victim of one in the ending when Monodam and Monophanie conspire to hijack the killing game and return it back to being a Bachelor rip-off.
  • Chromosome Casting: With Makoto having been the victim, the trial's entire cast is made up of female characters.
  • Downer Beginning: The previews depict the deaths of all the female main characters who didn't make the trial's roster as they failed to receive roses in the first Rose Ceremony.
  • False Confession: Tenko attempts one in a desperate attempt to save Himiko from execution.
  • Framing the Guilty Party: Tsumugi attempts to frame Miu as the one behind stealing Makoto's Spare Roses, only for Miu to coincidently choose to steal Sayaka's Rose later.
  • Gambit Pile Up: In addition to Himiko's murder plot, Tsumugi, Miu, and Sayaka all make attempts to steal Roses to ensure their survival.
  • Immoral Reality Show
  • Insistent Terminology: As the Monokuma declares his new name to be Chris Bearrison, even renaming the Monokuma File for the occasion.
  • Outlaw Couple: Miu accuses Himiko and Tenko of being one, with her theory being that Tenko set up the murder so that Himiko could commit it, but it's ultimately subverted with Himiko being the only guilty party.
  • Overshadowed by Awesome: Himiko and Tsumugi's motive for their respective plans comes down to recognizing how unlikely they were to survive further Rose Ceremonies over the other girls.
  • Refuge in Audacity: Himiko murders an unconscious and hidden Makoto on stage during a magic act.
  • Revealing Cover Up: Himiko ends up leaving behind a lot more evidence in her attempt to cover up after her crime than she did in the set-up or the actual murder.
  • Sad Clown: Despite taking up a lighthearted comic relief role for much of the trial, Komaru is notably suffering from the fact that both Toko and Makoto have ended up dead.
  • Shipper on Deck: Ibuki seems to be one to Himiko and Tenko, becoming quite insistent about how they must be innocent as a result
  • Ship Sinking: Despite her canon crush on him, Mukuro Ikusaba is among the first batch of girls who were executed for failing to receive a rose from Makoto in time.
    • Kyoko also takes the time during the trial to insist that she had no romantic feelings for Makoto.
  • Take Me Instead: After Himiko confesses, Tenko makes a false confession of her own and, even after the vote, tries to beg Monokuma to kill her instead.
  • Victoria's Secret Compartment: Miu's hiding place for the Rose that she stole
