Character Worlds' Fair is the twenty-fourth installment of the main-series Character Development Thread.

The centers of activity in this thread come in the form of its stalls. It's up to you, the writer, to use them to make your own fun for your characters. Intimidated? Don't be! Remember, the only limit to what you can find at the Character Worlds' Fair is your imagination.

The thread can be found here. It started in September of 2014, before petering to a stop in May of the next year.

Character Worlds' Fair contains examples of:

  • Against My Religion: Nioba objects strongly to killing Shark, as it's against her religion. She has no problem with the idea of killing Nazerno, though, because he is a slaver, and slavery is considered a far graver sin in her religion than killing.
  • Bazaar of the Bizarre: The Worlds' Fair is a sort of this, although more inspired after the originalChicago World's Fair than an Arabian market.
  • BFS: Nioba's weapon of choice is a giant ritual blade called an obano.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: Nioba has a bad case of this; she seems incapable of just standing aside when there's fighting about.
  • Disney Villain Death: Shark makes the monumentally stupid decision to try and distract Lihiri while she's attempting to transmute his bomb. The bomb is thus accidentally transformed into something that goes after him and grabs him before disappearing.
  • Final Solution: Lihiri, Dimi, and the Avatar of Carnage are all the products of a program intended to push their race into extinction.
  • Hated by All: With the sole exception of the Avatar of Carnage (which is barely sapient), Nazerno is utterly despised by literally every other character involved in his plotline, to the point that it virtually become a race to see which one manages to kill him first. It's Rey.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: The demise of Shark is a double example: he is killed as the result of his attempt to interfere with Lihiri's transmutation of his own bomb.
  • Innocent Fanservice Girl: Suela initially walks around topless, much to the shock of those around her.
  • Kick the Dog:
    • Nagako clearly cares about the beetles she sells as pets, sending them off with a prayer. Marion knows this, but buys one as a snack anyways, later devouring it after briefly toying with it.
    • After the Avatar of Carnage builds a tower out of little wooden blocks, Jidra deliberately kicks the tower over.
  • Mind Screw: Jidra repeatedly pull this on Dimi, attempting to make him doubt whether his decisions are his own.
  • Motive Rant: The Vakaza agents deliver a speech to Iris and Rey explaining their motivations as ex-soldiers fighting for a losing revolution and attempting to appeal to their common ground as soldiers. The second part fails miserably, as neither Iris nor Rey considers themselves soldiers to begin with.
  • Names to Run Away from Really Fast: The Avatar of Carnage.
  • Nominal Importance: The only named member of the Gongoozlers of Gaarthalak - their leader Ferl - is also the only one to survive more than a couple of posts into the battle with the Avatar of Carnage, with the rest being killed en masse by a single spell.
  • Ripped from the Headlines: Western Amalgamated bought out the infamous Camp Leatherneck for their own use.
  • Seen It All: Even by the standards of the Character Development Threads, most of the characters seem unusually jaded about the nature of the fair, whether they come from settings where interdimensional travel is a thing or not.
  • Sequel Hook: The last few posts set up possible future endeavors for Jidra and Dimi.
  • Shower of Love: Nioba and Lihiri share a brief one on the morning of the second day.
  • Ye Olde Butchered English: The Gongoozlers of Gaarthalak speak with a strong element of this in their initial introduction, using "hath" instead of "have" and referring to the fair as a "faire". They appear to have toned it down some afterwards, however.
