    • Alternate History: Due to one small event, that being Alternate Twilight having a restless night before Lord Tirek attacked, being the time when she was most insecure of her position as princess, it causes a series of events to happen which result in Empress Midnight taking over.
  • Antagonist Title
  • Anti-Villain: Midnight claims she is this, but it's merely her self-justifications under her previous influence to the Alicorn Amulet.
  • Armor Is Useless: Adverted with the Morks who need to have the armor in order to keep under Midnight's control.
    • Midnight's new suit for the final battle becomes this after Jack's intentional misbuilding of the armor.

    Jack: ...possible cramps and amnesia.

  • Awful Truth: Empress Midnight is alternate Twilight, the R.A.E.M. keeps this secret from her to prevent her as well from becoming evil.
    • Borris hiding the fact from his leaders that Captain (alternate) Dash is dead and Rainbow is posing as her, in order to keep their mental health up while leading the RAEM. The beans are spilled.
  • Badass Normal: Borris, a regular pegasi that's able to tackle super storms, form massive balls of weather, molten metal, electricity, and even magic, and is immune to fire and electricity.
    • Alternate Rarity becomes this, being apple to perform high-power magic. Midnight uses this to convince her to join her.
Midnight: You’ve been able to perfect the Magic Beam Emission attack.
    • Gruncle Boris could also qualify with his creation of various specific spells and the Alicorn Amulet.
  • Berserk Button: Never threaten to injure or even TOUCH Raindrop in front of Celestia.
  • Big Bad: Empress Midnight/Alternate Twilight Sparkle
  • Black Market: Boris resorts to selling the Alicorn Amulet to the black market in order to keep it away from Twilight.
  • Brick Joke: When Boris asks Midnight about working with dangerous chemicals, she says;
Midnight: Yeah I know, that’s why I’m having you do it.
    • This is later repeated by Alternate Atlas during the final battle before firing a massive crossbow with Alternate Daniel on the arrow towards Mecha Spike.
Alternate Atlas: No, that’s why I’m having him do it.
  • Cast Herd: Twilight's Atlas, Jack, Daniel, and Aaron are usually seen together in Midnight's castle.
    • The Morks and No-Ponies can also be classified as this.
  • Ceiling Cling: Midnight does this when she's infiltrating the R.A.E.M. and getting the second Alicorn Amulet.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: Both versions of Raindrop are turned into a dimensional crash upon touching hooves to stop Midnight.
  • Cue the Sun: Borris says this happened when the Ghost Pony ran into the horizon.
  • Damsel out of Distress: This nearly happens with Twilight escaping Midnight's prison along with the princesses and her (true) great uncle but ends up slamming in a door locked by other Morks.
  • Destination Host Unreachable: After Borris discovers that alternate Rainbow Dash died, he tries to make Twilight's Rainbow into "the original" for the other alternate friends. When in reality, it's a scheme to have a romantic relationship with a Rainbow Dash. This all backfires when Rainbow Dash realizes this and breaks up with him.
    • In the diary, after Gruncle Boris lost his brother, he tries to complete his project in hopes that it will resurrect him, only for it to fail and end up creating the Alicorn Amulet, setting up the events of Rise of Empress Midnight.
  • Deus Exit Machina: Midnight sending Discord into Tartarus.
  • Disabled Means Helpless: Most ponies think Raindrop is too weak and incapable to do anything due to her blindness and size. However, this actually becomes important in the final battle since the alternate Raindrop has also been preserved in the castle due to Celestia's overprotection of her, therefore being able to create the dimensional crash.
  • Doppelgänger Replacement Love Interest: Alternate Borris attempts this with Rainbow Dash, he later dies after finally earning Dash's affection. Rainbow Dash then finds Twilight's Borris and the two decide to know each other better before getting into a serious relationship.
  • Dressing as the Enemy: Alternate Borris wears a Mork helmet along with his casual armor to get a Mork to let him and his friends into Midnight's palace.

  • Emotion Control: Midnight uses pheromone to control her Mork's emotions to follow her orders and quickly recover from serious injury.
  • Evil Former Friend: Everyone takes an enormous hit when they realize that Midnight is alternate Twilight Sparkle. Their alternates already knew this, but wanted to keep it secret so Twilight doesn't become another Midnight.
  • Evil Laugh: Midnight and even her Morks pull this a couple of times, either through success or something a characters says.
  • Evil Me Scares Me: Empress Midnight is Twilight's alternate version of Midnight's world.
