With "Wagahai" itself being an archaic Japanese pronoun, most of the time it's been used since is a reference to this story.

  • Ayakashi Triangle: Shirogane is an ancient cat ayakashi who uses wagahai as a personal pronounced (his first line is even "Wagahai wa Shirogane") and ends his sentences with "de aru".
  • In the original Japanese dub of Azumanga Daioh, the bombastic (as is typical with Norio Wakamoto) way Chiyo's father identifies himself to Osaka during her dream sequence is a direct invocation of the book's title ("Wagahai wa neko de aru").
  • The Japanese name of Evil Cat, a cat who wears an oni mask as a reference to Setsubun, from The Battle Cats is “Wagahai wa onidearu”
  • Bungo Stray Dogs is a manga where the characters and their powers have a Theme Naming based on literature. One character is named Soseki Natsume, and his ability is named "I am a Cat".
  • In EarthBound (1994), when you first meet the Apple Kid and his mouse in Twoson, the latter says: "I am a mouse. No one has given me a name yet."
  • Both The Great Ace Attorney games feature Soseki Natsume himself who, on a few occasions, tries to escape from his "cursed existence" by telling himself "I am A Cat" and refers to himself as "wagahai" (although this is Lost in Translation outside of one scene where Ryunosuke and Susato mention that fact and use the pronoun as his cat's name). After being acquitted in both of his trials, he returns to Japan, where he writes I am A Cat.
  • The Strain Neko from K also introduces herself as "Wagahai wa neko de aru" and the series is her reason to live as a cat.
  • "Natsumi" Soseki appears as a character in Like a Dragon: Ishin! (game set in the 1860's when Natsume was only just born, hence the altered name), and is stumped on what animal he should feature in the novel he's writing. The protagonist can suggest a cat, since "cats are funny", and Soseki gains inspiration to write "I Am But a Cat"
  • Log Horizon has Cat Folk among the various playable races of the Elder Tale MMORPG. The player of one such character, Chief Nyanta, refers to himself by this pronoun due to being The Roleplayer of the cast.
  • Yukichi the huge bipedal cat from The Masterful Cat is Depressed Again Today can't actually speak, but uses the personal pronoun "wagahai" in his internal monologues.
  • In Nukitashi, Misaki tells that she likes Soseki, but she's referring to Akumenote  Soseki and the book "Wagahai wa Tachi de Aru". Tachi is Japanese slang for the top in a gay relationship, as opposed to neko, which refers to the bottom. In the English version, that title is translated to "I am a Pussy".
  • Persona 5 has resident cat-like mascot Morgana refer to himself with the pronoun "Wagahai". Also, a bit of comedy is derived from an inversion of the title—his ultimate Berserk Button is people calling him a cat, and his response every time is “I am NOT a Cat!”
  • In the manga adaptation of So I'm a Spider, So What? Kumoko's parallel minds at one point refer to themselves using a variant of the novel's opening line, substituting their job titles for "cat".
