Films — Live Action

  • In The Goonies, the Sheriff responds to one of Chunk's phone calls, thinking it to be another prank, saying that the last time it was about "those little creatures that multiply when you throw water on them".
  • In Small Soldiers, also directed by Joe Dante, Larry Benson and Irwin Wayfair are given new passwords when GloboTech swallows up the toy company they work at. Irwin's password is "Gizmo", which Larry uses when he can't remember his own. Gets an Ironic Echo later on when Irwin calls out Larry for putting military chips in their new action figures.
  • In Looney Tunes: Back in Action, the Gremlins theme briefly plays when DJ shows off his father's old car. Said car is an AMC Gremlin.
  • Mega Snake has a rather Gremlins-like plot with the Unteka, a mystical snake from Native American folklore. It even features the protagonist stealing it from the shop, and it comes with three rules, to never let it out of its container, to never let it eat anything living, and to "never fear the heart of the snake".
  • The Gremlins make a cameo appearance in Space Jam: A New Legacy, among the other Warner Bros. characters that feature in the film.

Live-Action TV

  • In the How I Met Your Mother episode "Definitions", Barney explains that the rules of dating are the same rules as with Gremlins. To prevent a girl from becoming your girlfriend, he says to "never let her have a shower at your place", "never see her during the day", and "never let her sleep over and have breakfast with you".
  • In Primeval, the color-changing Camouflage Beast closely resembles a Gremlin.

Video Games

  • The gremlins are a recurring monster in the video game, Monster Hunter (PC), resembling more like the creatures from this movie instead of the classical depiction of gremlins. They even share the same weakness of melting after being exposed to light.
  • The Minions from Overlord are very similar in appearance and behavior to the Gremlins.

Web Original

  • The Angry Video Game Nerd: In his "My NES Collection" video, the Nerd reads the warning on the back of an unlicensed Camerica game cartridge that says "Do not drop. Do not get wet. Do not leave in direct sunlight." He then says, "Interesting. Can you feed it after midnight?"
  • Glove and Boots has a blog about the movie, in which Fafa gives Mario a Mogwai as a Christmas present to Mario's annoyance and Mario breaks all the rules of caring for it thinking they're dumb.
  • One group of lemur-like arboreal hamster descendants in Hamster's Paradise are known as moglins, and bear some resemblance to the Mogwai.

Western Animation

  • The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron, Boy Genius episode "Attack of the Twonkies" has small furry creatures that turn into monsters when they hear music, similar to the Mogwai when fed after midnight.
  • In The Amazing World of Gumball episode "The Deal", Gumball, Darwin, and Anais, all turn into gremlins after being left alone for too long. Their "gremlin" forms resemble the gremlins from the film very closely.
    • In another episode, showing how Darwin first came to live with the Wattersons, he was shown to have been obtained as an ordinary goldfish from a mysterious shopkeeper that gives Richard Watterson "three rules". Amusingly one of them is "don't get it wet", much to Richard's confusion due to Darwin being, well, a fish.
  • One episode of Family Guy has a cutaway gag of Peter Griffin feeding his Mogwai after midnight. Said mogwai transforms into Fran Drescher, which a terrified Peter then kills with a microwave.
  • The Little Bear episode “Gingerbread Cookies” is a spoof of the film.
  • The Phineas and Ferb episode "Terrifying Tri-State Trilogy of Terror", one story has Perry getting wet with grape juice, which spawns an evil clone of him that goes on to spawn more copies of itself and wreak havoc around the town.
