Recap / Yu Gi Oh VRAINS Ep 65 Playmakers Breath

Go To

Kusanagi talks about Playmaker's origin. According to urban legends, there is a mysterious dungeon filled with many deadly traps in LINK VRAINS. In that dungeon, lies...

This episode contains the following tropes:

  • All for Nothing: Subverted. The reward for clearing the Duel Puzzle turned out to be a lie as Unnamed touches the sarcophagus and involuntarily causes it to dissipate, to the second Knight of Hanoi's amusement who scoffs at both Unknown and Unnamed before logging out and Unnamed's frustration. However, Yusaku observed the final layout of the Duel prior to the Ancient Ghost's defeat and compared it to Den City's layout, serving as a hint to the location of the Cyberse deck in the real world, and eventually finds the room containing the Cyberse deck, indicated by "Secure Gardna" on the front door.
  • Bait-and-Switch: In episode #64, Naoki made it seem like he knew Yusaku's secret, to the point Yusaku complied with Naoki's demands to go to a secret place to talk. Here, Naoki revealed what the secret was... only that it was not the one Yusaku was concerned with—or even knew was supposed to be a secret.
    Naoki: I know your secret.
    Yusaku frowns
Naoki: [smirks] Hey, Playmaker... is my soulmate, right? And since you're my best friend, you should feel proud, too!
Yusaku: [still frowning] What do you want to talk about?
Naoki: [smirks again] I know you have a part-time job.
Yusaku looks confused and tilts his head to the side
Naoki: I saw you working at the hot dog stand. The school forbids working part-time jobs, but I'm not so petty to snitch on you. However... [postcards suddenly materialize] Help me fill out postcards to enter Blue Angel's handshake event—
    Yusaku walks away, disinterested
Naoki: Hey! Fujiki! [crashes through the door] I'll snitch you out to Playmaker!
  • Deliberate Injury Gambit: Defied. Unknown activates "Tremendous Fire" which would deal 500 damage to himself and 1000 damage to the Ancient Ghost... then Unknown activates "Link Restart", negating the activation and Special Summoning "Binary Sorceress" back to his Field.note
  • Hoist by His Own Petard:
    • The first Knight of Hanoi's attempt to clear the Duel Puzzle with "Update Jammer", which had its ATK doubled by "Megamorph", backfires completely, as the Ancient Ghost activates "Chaos Burst", destroying "Update Jammer" before its attack could go through and fully depleting the Knight of Hanoi's LP.
    • Defied by Unknown. Because "Tremendous Fire" will cause him to fail the Duel Puzzle as it'll deplete all of his LP, he abstains from activating it from the get-go.
  • Trap Is the Only Option: Unnamed suggests that the rumor about the Cyberse deck may be a Hanoi trap. Unknown, however, doesn't care: if it is a trap, then it's a trap that will lead them to the Hanoi; if it's not, they'll get a deck full of cards the Hanoi want/fear, and thus the Hanoi will come to them to get it.
  • Truth in Television: It may seem strange that Naoki made such a big deal about Yusaku having a part-time job...except that in real-life, some Japanese high schools really do forbid their students from taking part-time jobs and doing so can have some serious repercussions.
  • Villain Has a Point: Zigzagged. The second Knight of Hanoi is right in that "Torrential Reborn" is unable to bring back the "Gadget Token", as Tokens simply disappear when they leave the Field in any way. He also mentions that "Tremendous Fire" will cause Unknown's LP to be fully depleted... except Special Summoning "Secure Gardna" means that its controller takes no Effect damage for the rest of the turn it's Special Summoned.note
  • We Only Have One Chance: Anyone who attempts to solve the Duel Puzzle has only one chance to do so, and they are devoured by a monstrosity and forcefully logged out if they fail to clear it.
