Recap / Yu-Gi-Oh! SEVENS Ep 4 "Goodbye, Student Council President!"

Go To

Gakuto finds himself torn between his duties and the excitement of Rush Duels.

Tropes:

  • Achilles' Heel: Fiendish Commander Yameruler blocks any Tribute Summoning of a monster level 7 or higher until the end of the opponent's next turn, effectively locking down the opponent's ace monster. However, it doesn't outright block summoning such cards. This allows Yuga to sidestep the effect by using Seven Roads Witch to Special Summon his Seven Roads Magician directly from his hand.
  • The Bet: Yuga stakes being allowed to play Rush Duels on school grounds against Gakuto stepping down as Student Council President. Yuga comes out on top, but Gakuto gets to keep his position on account of being far too popular to lose reelection.
  • Didn't Think This Through:
    • Rook tries to have Romin sing as part of the Rush Duel video, but never actually checked if Romin actually sings as part of her band. Romin immediately refuses since she only plays guitar and isn't confident in her singing voice.
    • Then Rook proposes they dance as part of the video, only to remember that he can't dance.
    • Rook makes Gakuto stepping down a condition of the bet, reasoning that he could replace him in the next election. It didn't occur to him to make sure Gakuto couldn't run again, so everyone votes Gakuto back in.
  • Exact Words: Rook makes Gakuto promise to step down as Student Council President if he loses to Yuga, which Gakuto graciously does when that happens. He's then immediately reelected because he never promised that he wouldn't run again.
  • Hollywood Tone-Deaf: Gakuto sings the school anthem with all the grace of an angry cat. The irony is that his VA is not only a good singer, but the song he's singing is the ending theme, which his VA also sings.
  • Lame Pun Reaction: Gakuto keeps making "ruler" puns with Yameruler, which makes Romin cringe every time.
  • Throwing the Fight: Gakuto deliberately holds back from summoning his ace monster, Fiendish Commander Yameruler, on his first turn despite having the means to summon it. He almost refuses on the second turn, too, until he's called out and decides to play for fun despite the stakes.
  • Too Important to Walk: Gakuto is too important to draw or set his own cards; his assistants do that for him. However, once he starts having fun, he does it himself.
  • Universally Beloved Leader: Gakuto is so respected in his role that, after stepping down as student council president, he immediately wins the emergency election.
