Recap / Yu Gi Oh Manga Duel 8 The Poison Man

Go To

Jonouchi takes Yugi and Honda out to some part of town that, as Yugi observes, doesn't seem all that safe. Jonouchi is following a map he printed out online to a place famous with "the fans." Before long, they arrive at the Junky Scorpion shoe shop, where they find what Jonouchi is looking for: Air Muscle high tech sneakers. The beshaded and goatee-bearing owner with a scorpion on a string around his neck berates Jonouchi for touching them, as they're extremely rare and not for sale. Jonouchi demands to buy them regardless, since he came a long way to find the shop. The owner states he can't sell them to just anybody; after all, some people will pay anything to get what they want, and some would even kill; someone was murdered over the sneakers the owner's wearing.

After Jonouchi proves unfazed by this, the owner proposes a game. The scorpion he's wearing is in fact a real scropion, with real poison, which he places into one of the sneakers and asks him if he has the balls to put his foot in there. Despite Yugi and Honda begging him not to do so, Jonouchi dives his foot in... and nothing happens. The owner lightly applauds; not wanting to ruin the sneaker, he didn't actually put the scorpion in there. Admitting to his loss, the owner sells Jonouchi the shoes at half their ten thousand yen price tag, and warns them it's dangerous to wear them in town because a gang called the Muscle Hunters have been going around stealing rare shoes. Not caring for the warning, Jonouchi ditches his old shoes in the trash and starts skipping away down the street, reveling in how good they feel. Although the display is highly embarrassing, Yugi is still happy for Jonouchi getting what he's wanted for so long.

They decide to go for some hamburgers when they are suddenly ambushed from behind by the Muscle Hunters, wielding a tire and box-end wrenches. They trap Jonouchi in the tire and smack Honda and Yugi on the head before they can retaliate, then proceed to beat them up some more as one of them strips the Air Muscles from Jonouchi's feet. Their task done, they leave.

After the three of them recover, Jonouchi apologizes to Yugi for pulling him into this before asking if he can get himself home, as Honda and him have no intention of taking this lying down. Yugi insists on going along if he's not in the way, which Jonouchi praises as being a man before allowing, saying to leave the fighting to them.

The Hunters enter an arcade, going to play some games with the short dough they just made. After they've been playing a while, Jonouchi and Honda approach them, but don't attack until the Hunters notice and look at them, since they don't attack from behind like cowards. The two promptly proceed to wail the everloving heck out of them, including breaking and bloodying one guy's nose, much to Yugi's awe. When they're done, Jonouchi demands his sneakers back, but the Hunters don't have them; they were paid by the shoe shop owner to steal them back, three thousand yen a person, as always. Yugi is quickly inwardly outraged at the owner's swindling, and the Puzzle shines...

Back in the store, the owner monologues to himself about how much fanatics will pay or something they think is rare. The other Yugi enters in spite of the "closed" sign and demands the sneakers back, saying he knows he paid the hunters to steal them from Jonouchi. Inwardly, the owner panics and thinks fast, figuring he can't have Yugi leave the shop knowing his secret. He pretends to just now notice he has the sneakers, and in the process slips the scorpion off its string and into the sneaker, expecting it to sting Yugi when he reaches for the sneakers. He holds them out for Yugi to take, and Yugi reaches out... and drops ten coins into the sneaker. He explains it's a game, like the owner's test of courage earlier, only this time there actually is a scorpion inside! They'll take turns pulling coins out of the sneaker and hoping they're not stung in the process, and whoever takes the most coins wins. The owner agrees to the challenge only if Yugi pays ten thousand yen for each coin he pulls out if he wins. Yugi accepts the terms, saying he only wants the sneakers back if he wins.

As the opposition is intimidated, thinking the mouth of the sneaker seems more like the mouth of a shark, Yugi goes first, and he successfully manages to extract one coin without harm. The owner goes, thinking how the pet has no respect for its owner, and gets one out as well. As Yugi takes his next turn, the owner thinks he has to find a way to wring the money out of Yugi, but he's not going to get anywhere just one coin at a time. After Yugi extracts his coin, the owner asks a question: anything goes as long as he sticks his hand into the shoe, right? Upon hearing the answer of yes, he draws a knife and stabs the shoe, believing he succeeded in killing the scorpion. Assured, he stabs his hand in, grabbing the remaining seven coins at once, and demands Yugi pay up.

Yugi, however, quickly states that he hasn't won yet. With the owner's fist all balled up, it's now too big to pull out of the shoe. And the quiet shuffling sound still coming from the sneaker indicates that the scorpion's not dead. The owner streams in great pain as the scorpion stings him, while Yugi states he wouldn't have been able to foretell how the game would turn out if the owner had any love for the sneakers or his pet.

Normal Yugi delivers the shoes to Jonouchi and Honda, who were on their way to rough the owner up themselves, explaining when he woke up, he was holding them and the owner was being taken to the hospital for a scorpion string, and he also doesn't know why one of them has a large hole in them. While this upsets Jonouchi a little, he's inwardly proud of Yugi getting them back by himself, and declares he'll wear them proudly and consider the hole a battle scar.
