Crowler arranges a duel between Chazz and Bastion to mold Bastion into his new puppet for defeating Jaden.

  • All According to Plan: Bastion's Wham Line to Chazz before his final attack with Water Dragon, shocking everyone with the reveal.
Bastion: Better double-check your work, because I've already done all the math!
Crowler: All the math?! You mean that-
Jaden: Bastion's had all this planned out since the very start?!
  • Baseball Episode: The episode starts with the boys playing baseball.
  • Dinosaurs Are Dragons: Bastion's Hydrogeddon and Oxygeddon monsters are dinosaurs, and he combines them to summon Water Dragon.
  • Eye Scream: Crowler takes a baseball to the eye due to a home run from the baseball game in the beginning. He is initially outraged when he thinks Jaden is responsible, but when Bastion admits guilt he immediately calms down and claims he has been meaning to refit his contacts, all in an attempt to make Bastion his new accomplice.
  • Go-Karting with Bowser: Despite the intense rivalry between the dorms, the Red and Yellow dorms are shown playing a friendly game of baseball in this episode, but not without Chumley worrying if it's safe for them to be friends with a Ra.
  • Graceful Loser: Zigzagged and mixed with Sore Loser. Chazz makes a bet that the loser of the duel leaves Duel Academy. The next episode shows him keeping his promise and drops out of Duel Academy, at least in the Japanese version, whereas the dub makes him a brat who refuses to be kicked around anymore.
  • Handicapped Badass: Bastion claims his deck was a mere prototype and its not ready to defeat Jaden. In the Japanese version, Chazz is distraught that he lost to something like that.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: In the Japanese version, Chazz brags about burning Bastion to ashes implying he would use fire attribute monsters. Chazz's comment clues Bastion to use his water deck.
  • Idiot Ball: Bastion just left his deck in a desk outside of his room allowing Chazz to easily toss them in the water.
  • Implausible Deniability: When Jaden initially accuses Chazz of throwing Bastion's cards into the ocean, Chazz lies and says he didn't do anything. Then Alexis and Zane arrive and Alexis says she witnessed Chazz doing it herself, only for Chazz to claim he was just throwing away his own cards and that maybe he and Bastion just have similar looking decks. Bastion later provides proof after the duel, showing he fished out one of the cards from the ocean and it is covered with a formula he wrote on it himself.
Bastion: I suppose you could've written it, but then the math would've probably been wrong, and it's not.
  • Logical Weakness: Bastion's Water Dragon reduces all opposing fire attribute and pyro type monsters' attack points to 0, which Chazz's Infernal Incinerator qualifies for as a fire monster.
  • Rank Up: Subverted. Crowler allows Bastion promotion to the blue dorm, but he declines saying he doesn't want to enter the blue dorm until he's the best among the first-year students and feels Jaden is better than him and thus has to defeat him before entering the blue dorm.
  • Tiger Versus Dragon: The episode shows Bastion overlaid with a tiger and Jaden with a dragon when they're up against each other.
  • Villain Ball: Chazz throws Bastion's deck into the ocean, despite it being standard practice for duelists (including Chazz himself) to have more than one deck. Sure enough, Bastion has plenty more cards than the single deck Chazz found in the hallway, so ruining one of his opponent's decks accomplished nothing but outing him as a frightened, insecure cheater and dishonorable duelist.
  • You Have Failed Me: Crowler punishes Chazz for having lost to Jaden, first by humiliating him in front of his fellow students by moving his seat in class and then announcing he will duel Bastion the next day and if he loses to him they will swap dorms.
