Go To

Kokurano is the fabled prophet of Domino High known for his accurate predictions. After one's student's house burns down, predicted by Kokurano, the female student body begins following him and seeking his predictions. However, he has his eyes set on Anzu who doesn't believe in fortune telling.

Tropes associated with this episode:

  • Abhorrent Admirer: Kokurano is this for Anzu, despite already assembling a fanbase.
  • Adaptational Context Change: In the manga, Yugi brings up the possibility of Kokurano having pre-prepared prediction cards with the air of someone who's seen and played every trick in the book. In the episode, he blurts the idea out when trying to keep Anzu away from Kokurano.
  • Attempted Rape: It's implied that Kokurano would have tried having his way with Anzu had Yami Yugi not intervened.
  • Cliffhanger: The episodes with Anzu realizing that Yugi and his alter ego are the same person.
  • Crazy Jealous Guy: Yugi thinks this is the reason why he said Kokurano is a fake.
  • Dramatic Irony: Kokurano makes a false prediction that Anzu will finally meet her rescuer face-to-face after school, unaware that her rescuer (Yugi) is right under her nose.
  • Foreshadowing:
    • Miho asks what's under Kokurano's coat. Kokurano tells her to get off.
    • While Yugi is calling him out on writing predictions ahead of time, Kokurano pulls his coat in closer.
  • Love Makes You Dumb: Anzu normally wouldn't trust Kokurano or his predictions for the life of her. However, when she realizes he could possibly have the power to predict the identity of her mystery rescuer (Dark Yugi), she decides to come forward and ask for her prediction.
  • Loves My Alter Ego: Anzu is more fixated on Yami Yugi than the real Yugi.
  • Phony Psychic: It's pretty clear that Kokurano has no clue how predictions work.
  • Screw Destiny: Yugi and his friends come to this conclusion, realizing it's better to work for the future you want than expect someone to predict it for you.
  • Secretly Selfish: After Kokurano lashes out at Yugi's accusations of being a fake with a prophecy, Yugi second-guesses himself and figures he's this trope. He admits to himself he was trying to expose Kokurano was a fraud, not for the sake of doing the right thing, but because deep down, perhaps he was a bit jealous of Anzu's mystery lover.
  • Self-Fulfilling Prophecy: A majority of Kokurano's predictions happen because he makes them happen.
  • Smarter Than You Look: Yugi suspects that Kokurano is a fake and calls him out on writing predictions in advance. He even figures out what his prediction "crushed by countless words" means.
  • Vocal Dissonance: It's kind of hard to believe that Kokurano is supposed to be a high school student. Unless he just has a naturally deep voice.
  • Wham Shot: In-Universe, Anzu sees that Yugi has an injury on the same hand as her rescuer, leading her to suspect they're one and the same.
