Recap / Yu Gi Oh First Anime Series Ep 11 The Rumored Capmon Its A New Arrival

Go To

Yugi befriends a college student named Warashibe who is obsessed with Capumon (capsule monsters played like chess). Lately, he had been using Yugi to get close to Miho, asking him to give her his letters or to send presents to her. However, when talking to him one day, Yugi realizes that there may be something wrong with his new friend.

Tropes associated with this episode:

  • Bad "Bad Acting": As a part of the "rescue" scenario, Yugi put a red cloth with eye holes over his face.
  • Bland-Name Product: Capumon sounds an awful lot like Pokémon.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Played with. While Warashibe's Iron-gate door mechanism does come into play later to trap Yugi and Miho, it subsequently falls apart, nearly crushing the two to death. In a way, it also plays this trope when it indirectly activates Dark Yugi.
  • Dramatic Irony: Warashibe's punishment is being trapped in a level one capsule. But since he's inside it, he doesn't know he's inside a giant capsule, let alone its level.
  • Expecting Someone Taller: Miho clearly wasn't expecting Warashibe to look so dorky.
  • Freudian Excuse Is No Excuse: Miho later admits that it was harsh of her to turn down Warashibe on the shallow basis that he was not up to her standards. Still, she voices that it doesn't justify Warashibe's stalking her nor how he poisoned her friends with tainted water.
  • Gratuitous English: Warashibe uses a lot of Engrish phrases with Miho such as "baby", "honey" or "my sweetheart".
  • Lack of Empathy: When Warashibe's trap door mechanism falls apart and nearly crushes Yugi and Miho to death, he merely expresses slight disappointment that it broke, rather than realize that he's gone too far.
  • Manchild: According to the note in the episode, "Warashibe" means "child". It's especially evident when he throws a fit over losing a game and not getting Yugi's help.
  • Murder the Hypotenuse: It depends if he tried to kill Anzu, Jonouchi and Honda. On one hand, he tried to remove them from Miho's life by giving them tainted water each. On the other hand, the tainted water in question made the trio all by deathly ill. At worst, they only need one day to recuperate in the school infirmary. Still, this counts.
  • Not Good with Rejection: Warashibe was less than pleased with Miho saying she doesn't like Capumon or him.
  • Out-Gambitted: Yami Yugi tricks Warashibe into destroying four out of five monsters and then using the last one to destroy all of Warashibe's monsters, which were all lined up in a row.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: In order to help Warashibe get together with Miho, Yugi agrees to disguise as a robber. The problem is, his disguise involves draping a red cloth with eye holes over his head, and the shape of his hair alone gives it away.
  • Stalker with a Crush: Until the "rescue" scenario, Miho had never met Warashibe in person.
  • Stealth Insult: Through winning the Shadow Game against him, Dark Yugi punishes Warashibe by having him stuck in a giant capumon capsule. The fact it has a number 1 on it is a wordless indication of how Dark Yugi deems Warashibe as a weak-willed person for his obsession and lack of empathy.
  • This Is Unforgivable!: Miho decides to confront Warashibe after he poisoned her friends. Well, she's at least concerned about Anzu getting hurt.
  • Yandere: Warashibe at first seems like a socially awkward guy who doesn’t know how to approach Miho with his feelings. However, it becomes clearer later that he is an obsessive guy who’s willing to poison Miho’s friends for “being in his way” and would love to keep her in a huge capsule as if she were a trophy.
