- Borrowed Catchphrase: Yuri borrows Yugo's Summoning Chant for Clear Wing Synchro Dragon when he summons it.
- Break the Cutie: Yuya gets to watch his father, his hero, not only get defeated but carded in front of him.
- Cold-Blooded Torture: Yuri's final move is this. Using a loop he slowly lowers Yusho's lifepoints till he destroys Sky Magician in one final attack. This also had the bonus of causing Yuya and Yuto pain because he kept summoning and destroying Starve Venom over and over again.
- Expy: As said before a lot of Yusho's cards are similar to Atem's cards. So Performapal Sky Pupil is one to Dark Magician Girl. They are both the pupil of their master's ace monster, Sky Magician and Dark Magician and have effects based on those monsters.
- Hero Killer: Yuri proves it again by not just defeating Yusho but carding him.
- Invincible Villain: Yuri proves to be this once more after defeating Yusho. Now it all comes down to whether or not Yuya can stop him.
- Loophole Abuse: Yuri created one to slowly lower Yusho's lifepoints and Sky Magician's attack points so he could defeat him in one turn.
- Mythology Gag: In Yuya's flashback, Yusho's opponent has The Masked Beast on the field. A ritual monster used by the Lumis and Umbra against Kaiba and Yugi in the original Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters anime.
- O.O.C. Is Serious Business: When Yusho states that Yuya is his son and that he will protect him, Yuri gets agitated and screams for Yusho to shut up, and refuses to hand over Yuya.

- Psychotic Smirk: Yuri gives his greatest as he shows Yuya, Yusho's card.
