Recap / Yu Gi Oh Anime S 4 E 157 Fate Of The Pharaoh 2

Go To

The duel between Yami Yugi and Rafael continues, with Rafael's Guardian deck outmaneuvering Yami's moves at every turn, even depriving him of his Legendary Dragon, Timeus. Thanks to Rafael's tactics, Yami ends up with the most dangerous card ever in his possession, and as he succumbs to his anger, he draws closer to resorting to a drastic move in order to win the duel, which could have disastrous consequences.

Tropes appearing in this episode:

  • Always Save the Girl: While winning the duel is definitely part of his motive for playing the Seal of Orichalcos, another reason Yami plays it is because it's the only card he has that can free Dark Magician Girl. (It works, but The Dark Side Will Make You Forget.)
  • Armor-Piercing Question: Rafael delivers a very effective one to Yami. Since he was suffering from Laser-Guided Amnesia, wasn't there a chance that he could've actually been an evil pharaoh? Despite stating that he believes otherwise, Yami is visibly shaken by the possibility.
  • Cliffhanger: The episode ends with Yami having played the Seal of Orichalcos and starting to succumb to its dark powers.
  • Death Glare: Yami gives off a visibly creepy one after he succumbs to the Seal of Orichalcos, with the red tint in his eyes not helping.
  • Moment of Weakness: Yami, against Yugi's protests, play the Orichalcos card, desperate to avoid defeat despite there being no risk in losing as long as the Orichalcos card isn't played. This comes back to bite him hard in the next episode.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: This is Yami's last thought just before the Seal of Orichalcos kicks in.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Yami is so consumed by the temptation to play the Seal of Orichalcos that he refuses to listen to Yugi warning him not to, despite (in the dub, at least) having vowed to never defy Yugi's wishes.
Yami: I'm out of options! There's only one card in my hand that can free my dragon so I can win the duel! I must play the Seal of Orichalcos! (grabs the card and prepares to activate it)
Yugi: (grabbing Yami's arm) PHARAOH, NO!
    Yami: Let go.
Yugi: No! You don't know what you're doing!
    Yami: Let go!
Yugi: Listen to me! This card is affecting your mind!
Yami: We're going to lose the duel! Can't you see? Trust me! It's the only way, Yugi. We must do this. Now let me go! (pulls free from Yugi)
Yugi: Please, don't play that card.
Yami: Now I activate...the Seal of Orichalcos!
  • Pride Before a Fall: Yami's unwillingness to accept a harmless defeat proves to be his downfall, as he plays the Seal of Orichalcos, despite knowing its corruptive and soul-stealing influence.
  • Wham Episode: Yami activates the Seal of Orichalcos.
  • Wham Line: "Now I activate, the Seal of Orichalcos!" (by Yami, btw!)
  • Wham Shot: After Rafael plays Exchange which causes him and Yami to swap cardsnote , Yami wonders what he finds so amusing about the situation, and then he sees the card that Rafael gave him. It was the Seal of Orichalcos.

"Now let me go!"

Yugi begs his partner not to use a mind-corrupting, soul-stealing card, but the Pharoah wrestles control from him and plays it anyway.
